I have a 1998 740Il with the ZF5 transmission. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a Remaned transmission at a good price with a warranty. The shop that my car is now he is trying to kill me for a remaned or a used one. This was a very bad time for this to happen. I don't want to be taken and sold junk.
Please help me.
thanks

I just went through a trans replacement so get ready to grab your ankles. After too much research and talking to the BMW gurus I opted for a low mileage used transmission from
http://www.bavengine.com/index.html
Price was $1500, no core charge, included torque converter, dry (which means it needed fluid, more on fluid below)
I checked out some remanned ones but if you look at the fine print, they don't have to return all of your core charge if they tear down the trans and deem some of the parts to be damaged (duh! thats why I need a new one)
And in talking to the BMW race guys, if the tranmissions aren't rebuilt with ZF parts (OEM), they fall apart in about 6 months.
Most of the rebuilt ones were between $1800 and $3500 with another $1000 core charge that you could write off. Together with the R&R of trans, $800, you could easily spend $4K.
After you find a trans, then you need fluid. If you buy it from the BMW dealer it will cost about $400. Most dealers only sell it in 25 liter increments and its $16-$20 per liter........if they have it........Hint, use the AUDI fluid. Its the same stuff, priced lower, you can just buy what you need and they usually have it in stock.
Or you could buy one from the BMW dealer..............and have them install it.
They get about $7K out the door, but you get a 24 month unlimited mileage warranty.
Good Luck

or do what I did and get a used one, change out the fluid with the ESSO VW/Audi fluid and do it all under 1300.
