I just recently decided to replace the upper wind shield gasket on my 1996 E38. The existing one was almost completely gone. I did the repair in about 15 minutes and it looks great!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

The problem is I now have an incredible amount of wind noise coming from the from my wind shield. I have seen allot of posts with this happening after replacing the glass but I just replaced the upper rubber seal. The rubber is layed flat and perfect! I am certain the glass did not move.

I am ready to rip it out and go with out one.<o:p></o:p>

Any Ideas? <o:p></o:p>

Is the noise a whistle or a vibration-type sound? A possible diagnostic process is as follows:

Attach cloth tape to molding seams, glass seams, body seams and any other protrusion seam that might create wind noise in the area of concern. Road test the vehicle and note any changes in wind noise.
Remove the strips of tape one at a time. Road test the vehicle after removal of each strip, and again note wind noise.
When wind noise reappears, replace the last piece of tape that was removed. Remove a different piece of tape. Road test the vehicle again. Keep removing tape strips and road testing until the source area has been isolated.
Once the problem area has been identified, cut the strip of tape into several pieces and place them back over the area. Remove sections of the strip one at a time, road test and note wind noise. Keep removing tape pieces and road testing until source area has been narrowed down further.
When the exact source of the wind noise has been isolated, repair as necessary using butyl tape, body sealer or additional weather-stripping.Also check this: http://www.popularmechanics.com/how_to_central/automotive/1272281.html

I know in one of my vehicles I had a few oak tags in the engine compartment that vibrated against the windshield. I had no idea what it was and it drove me crazy. I opened the hood and got out the vacuum and that was it. That is not your issue, but it illustrates the sensitive nature of the air flow around a moving vehicle and how it doesn't take much of an imperfection to create a noise.

This is the best info I have seen over 3 boards. Thank you

The noise starts as a light whistle about 20mph and turns into the strong hissing sound of a window open just a bit. If there is any cross wind it does not make a noise. I will start the tape process tomorrow and post my results. Thanks for the input and I will figure this out. Every day I try to make my ride a little nicer! Some days I am more successful than others!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

:redspot I just crossed the same bridge, I replaced the molding last week and after I had a tremendous amount of wind noise! The problem was the car had a poor windshield install from the previoud PO, I had the widshield removed and re-sealed. Problem solved!

I did the tape trick and found my wind noise was coming from the new rubber upper molding I replaced. It seems when it bends to the corner it raises slightly. This is barley noticeable in the photo but it creates allot of noise that seems to be coming from the wiper are. I never would have thought sound would travel like that.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Dan's right, the problem is caused by someone installing it wrong.
