Engine blow ups on BMW M3
Company starts recall in North America

After a series of engine failures BMW is going to recall the current model M3 on the North American market. According to the manufacturer, vehicles affected are mainly delivered from November 2001 up to February 2002. At a certain series of engines it is suspected that particles/residue caused within the production process are being transfered from the oilpump in to the oilcirculation, which has caused severe problems at the rod bearings. BMW did verify that all owners of vehicles produced within this certain timeframe are going to be notified in writing. Most of the vehicles produced in this particular timeframe have been made for the U.S. market, and therefore BMW is considering placing a recall there only. Exact numbers have not been released from the company but rumors are talking about some several hundred cars being affected. According to BMW, cars are not going to be exchanged entirely, only the engines. The costs are estimated at around 10,000 Euros per engine.

I'm not sure if it is true or not... but I found it on the web. I'm waiting for more detailed/official information.

Ha! I'm a 3/02 build. Not only that, my car was produced the last week before the strut brace became standard. At least I get the warranty!

Thanks for the info.

That's a sweet deal for affected M owners if true.

Fresh new engine.....

Looks like BMW are serious about keeping their M owners happy.

Seems that they finally realized that in the long run they will benefit from this. B/4 the warranty extension, I was fairly certain that I would have not considered BMW again. Now, I'm certain I will.

I don't know parts of that sound fishy.....

Most of the vehicles produced in this particular timeframe have been made for the U.S. market, and therefore BMW is considering placing a recall there only.

We have our own assembly line??

I'll believe it when the mail comes, btw why aren't roadsters and ///M coupes mentioned?

I was told (by BMW techline) that S54 motors would be covered, you can call the number and they will check your warranty by VIN number.

Sounds good, though this will mean that the engine VIN doesn't match the car now.

So did they admit to the recall being done or they were talking about the S54 warranty extension in general?

Thanks,
Florian

My car was delivered on October 2001 as a 2002 model, that means that its not included right?

For the moment BMWNA will not say anything. I called them and the customer relationship person knew s$hit. But she mentioned that she got more than one call asking for the same thing and promised to come up with more details. If anybody got a different answer it would be interesting to know.
