View Full Version : Thieves suck
95m3Lightweight 01-07-2007, 11:04 PM So some asshat decides they want my GPS, roommates cell phone and m coupe keys bad enough to jimmy both drivers and passenger side doors to take it. On a F150 it seems that bending the sheet metal down underneath the door handles exposes the lock and door handle lever. So instead of just busting an easy replaceable glass, they bend the fnnn door sheet metal which will require 2 new door replacements.
This was at Jason Deli's on lavista just inside 285. 8pm, heavy rain down pour, parked 70ft from the entrance underneath a bright street light. I could even see my truck from our table but never noticed anything. They snatched a Garmin 2730 with XM, cell phone, bmw keys and V1 remote display. Lucky for me in that they shut the door on the V1 and it fell underneath the seat.
If anyone notices a 2730 cheap, let me know as I will repay with cash for a lead. (longshot I know)
I only wish I could have seen them do it, spending a night in Dekalb pokey for assault or attempted murder would be worth it.

Thanks Carter.
I actually asked when I put this truck on my policy about GPS and other items etc. Most insurance companies state it must be bolted down or mounted in a factory location. Such as a cd player is mounted in the normal radio location it will be covered, since this GPS is normally sitting on the dash on a beanbag mount, it is not covered nor are the cell phone or $100 bmw key. The doors should be covered under my comprehensive policy but with a $500 deductable.
I blame myself as much as the jackass crack head who stole the stuff. I normally hide everything before parking but today had lots on my mind and talking to my friend as we pulled up. I think I am not going to bother locking my doors anymore as the damage to the doors getting in can cost as much as what items are stolen.

GPS receivers do not transmit signals. Not most consumer versions, anyway.

Actually a GPS only receives a signal, doesnt transmit one so you cant find a stolen or lost gps.
What does suck and PISSES ME OFF TO NO END is the fact the phone company and/or police can track a cell phone. But they wont unless a murder or something big is involved. Lets see we spend billions on the drug war, stopping people going 10mph over on a interstate but they dont want to waste their time on someone who damaged property and stole $1000plus worth of stuff surely to go buy drugs? and I am sure this person probably has been doing it before and will do it again. I woudl be all over being able to use something like a cell phone to track a theif and put them away. Talk about fnnn easy work to find someone with a cell phone for a beacon.
I asked the cop about it and he said only in a murder situation. I responded "well track it and tell me where, you will have your murder case!"

+1. I had to look into this exact scenario when I used to drag a $4K saxophone around.
Yes, I was a band geek. No, I didn't go to band camp. Yes, after hearing the stories I wish I had. Band chicks are like Alyson Hannigan.
One thing- Double check and make sure they didn't nab your registration or insurance info, or anything else that might have been in the truck that had your address on it. Also double check to make sure they didn't swipe your garage door opener.
Most of the time they take keys (and openers) is b/c they've got your home address off something, and they will come back for more....

///Maniac 01-08-2007, 05:04 PM I live up there near Northlake and the entire area right at the Perimeter has gone down the tubes big time.
Thanks for the headsup.
I only go up there for the Publix and Crescent Moon. The Mall is a toilet now.
Shame.

tpattison 01-08-2007, 05:12 PM I remember the decline of Cumberland Mall. Back in the 80s it was a nice mall, then it went downhill and didn't turn around until the end of 2006. Now it's trying to model itself after Perimeter Mall.

You mean were are nearly neighbors and you still wouldnt sell me those seats for a fair price? :mad
I kid. Yes it sucks that the area is crap now. But I figure in another 2-5 years it will be a rebuilt trendy area, it is just too close and just too damn convenient to most areas in town. I actually like the Tucker area more so than some of the hoods down around highlands O4W etc.

Shit, all they have to do is hit HOME on the GPS and they have friggin directions here. We do have a 100lb lunatic watch dog that will take care of any intruder but I worry about the cars etc.
I personally would LOVE to hear the front door being opened late at night. :redspot I would just hope the cops would let me take back my GPS as they are carrying the body away.

Should have seen it during the 70s. Hardwood floors, the 3-story fountain in the middle, with a spiral staircase going up inside it to the lounge area at the top. Very cool indeed. :buttrock
Every incarnation after that has sucked. :thumbdown

LoveLEE143 01-08-2007, 08:16 PM Apparently thieves have figured out this method of breaking in cars. Happened to my roommates truck and our friends the same night. They take a screw driver and jam it under the door lock and pull up and the door just opens. The factory alarms thinks you are using a key to open the door and wont sound. The insurance company says it is becoming a problem in Atlanta. It Sux. You can get a metal plate installed to block this from happening.

I remember it from the 70's as well. Remember when Cobb Center Mall was something as well? That was before the Smyrna area took a nose dive too.
You're not the only native who grew up in the area Doc. ;) I was born at Emory (a long long time ago) and grew up in Douglas & Cobb counties.

Yep! Japanese koi garden in the center. And up the hill toward S. Cobb Drive, one of the first Pizza Inns, and across the street from there, the Mister Donut. :redspot
Remember the office supply store just north of Cobb Center that got gutted by fire? A "fire sale" back then meant you went shopping by picking your way through the ashes of the burned-out building. (Fun stuff!) Couldn't get away with that today. :rolleyes

Sad but true... And Fair Oaks used to be a nice place, too. :az

I saw that while searching the problem.
But, it wont stop them from trying and in my case that is the bigger expense here, 2 fooked up doors that are going to be $1200 to fix. It might have helped in my case since it was such a open and public place so they might not have wanted to make noise breaking the window. But then again if they attempt and cant get it open they most likely will break the window to grab something and go.
Steal something, lose a hand. After about 1000 crackheads cant smoke a crack pipe, most will stop stealing shit.

Consider yourself lucky. In the circles I know, more vehicle crime/loss has happened in the O4W than all other areas of Atlanta combined. My old college roommate had his jeep stolen, current truck broken into twice and this a gated community. Sean H on this board had a sizable piece of side walk thrown thru his car window. Good friend's GF found a bum sleeping in her car and spent days getting that smell out. back in 02 I had 2 break ins while staying at the GF's place. That idiot tree hugger liberal give it all to crack head because they need it made a statement to the effect I shouldnt be mad about it. Needless to say that was the end of that mistake. Granted the O4W is changing, but it hasnt changed completely.
bdigel 01-10-2007, 09:03 AM Not lucky, Smart , Burglar bars on the house, Don't leave anything in the car, and the street the house is on, the nieghbors where active in watching things . The yuppies moving in are changing that though. PS The wife and I actually live in Dickhater now. Still own the house in o4w, I think 5th ward, vinecity , the bluff are much much worse than 4w.

In all fairness, I've also had a window shattered in a shurch parking lot in a Columbus, GA suburb. These sorts of things happen wherever people are present. Even my parents house, out in the middle of freakin' nowhere Oconee County had a break-in attempt many years ago.

Of couse shit happens everywhere, just happens more often in some places vs others. Any area close to an inner city, low income area is going to have higher crime numbers.
As to being smart etc that only goes so far. Crime also tends to be a game of %'s, it is going to happen to certain folks regardless of how smart, safe, forward thinking they tried to be.
I have worked on projects in every section of this city and this is the first time a personal vehicle has been hit in the last 10 years. Spent 11 months working off of MLK in the worst area of town. On a weekly basis I would come out of a gas station or McDonalds to find someone standing in the bed of my truck trying to get into the tool box. It became a game just to play chase them.
I choose where I eat, where I park, how I park etc. I was lazy this time as I didnt think the area scared me enough to remember to clean the dash of items etc. I also believe this was such a risky snatch and grab that it was someone who followed me to the parking area when they noticed a lit gps on my dash. Otherwise in the heavy rain they would not have seen the item and who is going to pick out a 8 year old truck to hit amoung much newer cars with surely more valuable items?
Mike
tpattison 01-10-2007, 03:58 PM I live in the O4W and never had a break in. Hell I've even left the doors unlocked to my house one night when I was too drunk to remember to lock them. Never has anything happened. I live 3 blocks off North Ave off of Boulevard. Then again all my neighbors know who I am and what I do for a living. People cross on the other side of the street in case my dogs decide to come see them.
