My 95 740i (92K on the odometer) has a shimmy when accelerating from 45ish - 60ish, a wider range than most who have had similar problems, I think. I'll be taking it in to have that looked at as well as to have the fuel tank replaced.
The fuel tank replacement will involve removal of the rear seat, but I don't know a thing about suspensions. Is there anything I should have the mechanic look at while he's looking in both places? It's always nice to save on some labor when I can.
Thanks!

If its not your brake rotors or tires then more than likely its your front control arms the lower ones that look somewhat like an S. I have the same problem I'm either gonna replace them with a new pair of arms or pull them off and change the bushings to ones from a 750 or ones that are stronger.

I'd assumed the front control arms/bushings, as that was what I'd read about here most often.
I wonder if the thing to do is get the wheels balanced and aligned first?

No, Don't get an alignment get it done after you get the control arms replaced cause you will pay for an alignment twice if you do. Once you replace the control arms your shimmy will go away, you can replace the pair of control arms and get a good price for them off of ebay or the bushings if you dont want to pay that much for like 50 bucks for the pair. If you are a DIY'er you can remove the old control arms and take them to a shop to remove the old bushings and press in the new ones and you are all set. They have a write up on the removal and install process on e38.org

Can you give a bit of history on this. Is this something that developed gradually, or did it begin to occur after you had some sort of maintenance or tire change done? I think that's important to know before just saying it's this or that.
