View Full Version : Adding Weight Ballast CP Louie 01-07-2007, 08:05 PM Due to a reduction in IP weight for an E36 M3, adding ballast is something that I no longer need to do. Thanks for trying to help. Chris Steve J. 01-07-2007, 08:11 PM Lead weights. Google is your friend. Here is the first place I clicked on, but there are hundreds I am sure. http://www.maycoindustries.com/specialty_products.htm http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/2164,23_Lead-Ballast.html basically just click on any of the first couple hundred and you are bound to get what you are looking for in almost any of them. Google Lead ballast, lead weight boxes, penalty ballast, penalty weight boxes, etc. You should be able to find a couple hundred places in no times, and the roundyround shops probably won't be too expensive either. I'd suggest finding one local since you are in NC though, as the shipping will be $. Not sure what the crurent ballast rules are, but get them low and near CG...unless you want to use them to change your f/r ratio, in which case you'll need to distribute them as per your setup. 50lbs can make a difference if placed in the right location...but it'll be up to you to find the place that benefits you the most. Eric1H 01-07-2007, 08:40 PM have the interior of the car rhino lined, makes a great interior liner and adds about 50lbs to the car :-D of course it's not the cheapest option krisko 01-07-2007, 08:42 PM I used weight plates designed for a home gym. Picked them up at Play it Again Sports for around $.25 per pound. I found the holes in the plates worked perfectly with a large bolt. I used huge washers under the car to keep them locked in. My ideal location for corner balancing was on the floor behind the pass. seat right up against the back seat (90lbs) and 30lbs was in the spare tire location in the trunk. Obviously your location may be different. Ideally you would be in the car with all racing accessories strapped in (coolshirt box, camcorder, helmet on). Then a buddy spreads the weight around until you come up with a solution. CP Louie 01-07-2007, 08:46 PM I used weight plates designed for a home gym. I will get some weights at that store next time I have to come down the mountain to the ATL. Chris krisko 01-07-2007, 08:49 PM Thanks Chris that is very helpful. I was thinking about behind the passenger seat. I will get some weights at that store next time I have to come down the mountain to the ATL. I'm not sure it's worth your time but I have about 12 of these plates sitting in my garage...you know 'just in case'. I live south of the ATL but I can get them to the Discovery Parts trailer and you can meet up with him trackside. I have the bolts and everything. mcclaskz 01-07-2007, 09:08 PM I mounted the coolshirt cooler in the trunk to help get some weight back there. The IP weight drops for next year to 2970 just to note.
