I have a '99 M3 Cabrio. Between the canvas top and the headliner is some kind of plastic sheet. Can anyone tell me what it is for as mine is ripping apart and disintegrating. In fact, at this point it is mostly gone.
TIA

Keep your vacuum cleaner handy....you will be cleaner that crap up everytime you turn around. Other than that....doesnt cause a problem.

I don't think I even have that. Never heard of such thing, nor do I recall seeing it on realoem.com

It's a vapor barrier and also provides some sound insulation. It is part of the headliner, and normally bonded to the inside surface. Time and heat allow it to separate. The pieces can plug the drain holes in the convertible top's stowage compartment.

Thanks for all the information.
Since it started hangingd down I have started to cut it and sometimes pull it away. It seems like it is pretty far gone.
I just wanted to make sure it wasn't critical to the top.

its fixed to the inner headliner, not a seperate part. if you havent noticed it, then its either all already flaked off on your car, or it hasnt started flaking off yet.
