I'm planning a snowboarding trip to Mammoth (driving from SD) over MLK weekend. Is anybody here familiar with the road conditions going up there? Will I need 4WD or chains?
Also, does anybody know how I might go about renting a cabin for 6-8 people? Otherwise, I was planning on staying in Bishop.
Thanks!

We usually take our denali up there, all the roads are plowed pretty good you shouldn't have anything to worry about except all the other people going on mlk weekend...

the roads leading up to mammoth will be super fun if you go with the m3. As long as it doesnt snow within a day or two earlier you will be fine.

If a storm comes though close to the time you are going up, there is probably a phone number you can call to get road conditions, or something.

Too bad I have to carry boards etc. I do miss the snow driving that I used to get in MD!

Whenever travelling to the mountains for snow it's a good idea to at least pack snow chains in the car just in case you need to show a Ranger.
Also check weather.com to see what sort of weather Mammoth Lakes has been receiving. That should give you an idea of the condition of the roads.
As far as lodging in Bishop, I'd just search for all the local hotels/motels and then call.
Have fun. I wish I were going snowboarding.

Yes you should always carry chains, water, and food when traveling in the mountains. Another good idea is a large candle which you can light if you get stuck and you need to keep warm. The road is generally well maintained but I've driven up there in near white out conditions where the road was very snowy.
Just find a motel or something in mammoth, there are a ton of places to stay. Definatly NOT worth driving back to Bishop to sleep.

Carry chains to show to the Ranger? Are they required by law up there?
Yeah we'll bring the necessaries, but I think there should be enough traffic on the main road to keep us from being in too much danger.

Not the ranger but CHP will ask to see chains if conditions are at all snowy dicey.
