Anyone have a book for the e39 ? Parents need one.

Also the headlights when they auto level are stuck pointed up. When you turn the car on they aim down then up and stay up. They normally work fine but have recently failed to work properly.

This is on a 2001 530.

Then normal is way messed up cuz normal is lightin up trees and tops of houses. This started just a few days ago when the car was started pointing down hill and has acted like its pointed downhill ever since.

you have broken headlight adjusters. very common issue with the AE* headlights. there is no replacement adjusters that your can find at a dealer. they dont sell them. ask your parents to push down or up on the bulb. if it moves around easily then you have broken adjusters. or if there headlights bounce around. to fix this you either buy aftermarket adjusters which run $100 a side. there not to hard to find but they can be. you will need to bake your headlights, pry them open, replace broken adjuster. then repeat the procedure to close the headlights.

or you can do what most of the E39 guys including me have done......zip ties....crazy as it sounds it works the best, especially if you dont want to open the headlights.

Remind me to take a look at it when we come over today. I know exactly what the problem is. It's one of those 2 sensors, or both maybe. The sensor either came loose or broke off. They aren't terribly expensive and are easy to replace with some ramps. I'll bring you vol. 1 of the e39 bentley, i have no idea where teh 2nd volume is which is all the electricals. I haven't used it in a while, so you guys can borrow for a bit if you want. Opposing what Raza said, if they point down and then up...the adjusters are not likely to be broken, it's the sensor on the control arms instead.

:confused

I didn't know they were aiming on the roof of homes & tops of trees. When I turn my xenons on, they aiming to the ground & back up to the height of the hood.

that's a good deal for it. get that. Check out the little sensor on the front and rear control arms, there is one per axle...i think it's front right and rear left. The plastic part probably came loose and is flopping around now. you could probable center them manually by hand, and then unplug the connector to the motor so they dont move til you fix the sensors.

hes still gotta get the motor that runs the lights down. so if he unplugs it, its not going to to into a nuetral setting. shouldnt he be able to tell if the motor or sensor is his problem when he starts the car. its suppose to auto adjust and if its not moving at all when he starts it thats his issue. but unplugging the motor on the headlights isnt going to make them go down.

i think y'all should race.

If I unplug the motor and manual adjust it might work. But I'll just replace or fix the senor. I'll be back next weekend.

its not the motor if both lights are like that. its actually more complex then that. when you turn the car on the car adjusts the lights. the suspension is what controls the motors. i dont see how they would get stuck going up or down a hill. but theres sensors on each front suspension. those snesors control the lights. im not to sure if theres only 1 sensor for both lights or if theres one for each side. youd think there would be only one. but if the sensor was to come off you would think they would at least move around on ignition. you can however take the motors out its not very hard thing to do. but i would suggest changing the sensor before you do that.

and im not racing brandon

6 speed manual > my auto

not even worth it. however my car looks better. :D

 looks better....nice one. Yes mine will blow his away.

The sensors on the suspension are most likely broken and are not telling the motors to adjust. Crawl under the car and manually move the sensors to the center and then unplug the motor connection on the headlight. Raza is making this sound much more difficult than it is. There is one sensor per axle, on opposing sides. I believe it's front right and rear left, but im not sure. If i am understanding you correctly, the lights are down when they are turned on. Soon after they adjust all the way up. If the motors are not working, then there's another issue.

blow me away.......SYKE.....youd win but it wouldnt be more then 3-4 car lengths :embarrasm

i think my pops is considering selling the lexus and getting a 540i/6 or a 540iT. hes got the lexus up for sale and looking for one of those right now.

even if the sensors were broken wouldnt the lights still start at a nuetral setting in the beginning then work there way up. thats how oscars lights were when he was over at my place and we were messing with mine.

austin find out if they move at all in the beginning or just take out the motor and the lights will go back to nuetral settings.

3-4 car lengths is pretty much blowing someone away... 1 length or less is a close race. 2 lengths is roughly a half second through the traps.
