Okay, so there is the current list, sans copies. I'm sorry I haven't been on in two days - things have been crazy.

It looks like we have support for the production once we have a solid prototype. Since the R&D phase is pretty much all up to me, it may be moderately slow, but I think it'll be worth it. I think the setup will add a lot of late-model luxury class to our e36's without compromising... well, anything.

Here are the goals:

1) At or below 300 dollars for the kit
2) Install, when said and done, results in factory fit and finish
3) Factory (or better) reliability
4) No welding necessary for the car owner
5) Pretinted glass (30%?)
6) Manual Sun Shade (again, OEM fit/finish)
7) As assumed from number 2, no leaking or rusting
8) Factory Sunroof functions (Tilt up, and slide back into cartridge)


Again, I would like to clarify that the above are the goals. They are not promises. I understand that many of your interests in this product are depending on all of those being true, so of course you can rest assured that every effort will be made to succeed.

Okay guys, I'm going to be very blunt and honest throughout this process. The list thus far is to gauge interest. The result is that there is sufficient interest to make pursuit of production for the product worthwhile. As a result, R&D has begun, and it will potentially be a fairly slow process. It may be a month or two before the first production runs occur, but that means that the long awaited glass moonroof kit is finally available for our cars.

I would appreciate your productive input, and your understanding of the difficulty of putting something like this together. I will update you all when there is something to update with. In the meantime, if you're interested, and your name isn't on the list, add yourself!

dose someone actually make these? i'v never seen one before and as a person who has taken appart his sunroof i find it very unlikely that it could be pulled of and most of all look good.

but still i dont see how it will turn out well. i guess the major issue that keeps coming to me is that metal support taht will end up in the middle of the glass. what do you plan to do about that.

That really is the million dollar question, isn't it? I have some ideas that I'm going to try and get down in a technical design. Any suggestions or assistance is welcome.

I am no expert but exactly what you mean by metal support bar in the middle of the glass. My simple mind tells me that if we can find a durable glass that can take the punishment of sun, rain, snow and whatever elements nature can throw at us it would work. I know of few companies that produce such materials and I am sure you do to. Now if it is cut to the size of our current sun roofs with the proper insulation and "whatever else you have to add, why would there be a need for a support beam in the middle of the glass. Again I know very little about constructing something like this so forgive me if my question insults u or anyone, just want to get a bit of info so I can see if I can help, I have a few friends that are very good at customizing parts for cars and I think I can propose it to them, just need to know a little bit more before I speak to them.

I'm working on it as much as I can, but I don't have much free time at the moment, working and college takes up a ton of time. The cold doesn't help either. The high is 5 degrees today. I need to buy some garage space around here.

What you guys need to look into is maybe go to a junk yard that has a moonroof form an E46 and look at it see if you can come up with anything.

And as far as I know EEEEeeee36 is pretty much just a middle, he buys stuff from some contact overseas and sells it to us.

I understand what you mean, but here's the problem at hand, the metal support on the current roofs is what helps the roof lift up when tilting. And helps to reduce pressure and stress on the very expensive cheap plastic parts. I've had the luxury of ripping apart my roof a few time last year:)

Without that we would just have a glass roof.

Nothing has been done? Well, thanks for discrediting me. How incredibly demotivating to have this kind of doubt. I'm just a fellow enthusiast trying to make something happen for everyone, because yes, there is a lot of interest for this.

If you feel the need to complain about it, instead of taking the time to shoot me and the interested parties in this thread down, how about taking the time to contribute in whatever way possible to making this happen. I'm working and going to school full time here, so it's not like I can devote several hours and several hundred dollars a day.

Well, right now we're relying on the latter (myself), who happens to be a poor college student, working full time while taking classes. I'm happy to do this, and I'm very pumped about accomplishing this, but my resources are scarce, so progress is slow.

If we had multiple people brainstorming, I know EEEEeeee36 is up for production and distribution once the R&D is done.

So, let's get a list of people willing to contribute their time and resources, along with how they feel they can :help

If they can make a carbon fiber piece, can they make a piece out of tinted plexiglass? Even if it is just a pop-up...I would be cool with that. I am looking for weight savings and something that doesn't whistle at high speeds or leak.

I am all for keeping it simple. So even if anybody knows a 'simple' way to pull all the motors, etc. out, and just put in a 'window' I'm cool with that as well.

I've been trying to get an E36 moonroof made for over 3 years. Search my old threads and you'll find the thread I made that's long since been buried by the passage of time - you were actually posting in my thread if I remember correctly.

Here's hoping you have better luck than I did. :(

as much as I would love one of these, I am like others in this thread and I am not sure if it can be done and still be as good as OEM.

But, if it happenes and I hear good things then I would be all over it.

If this is going to be OEM Quality, I just don't see how it can be done on a production run of 100 or so and cost under $300... if it can happen, I'd be amazed and will buy a few.

Well, I'm not getting many offers for support on this, aside from final production by EEEEeeee36. I need help with the R&D phase or this isn't going to happen before summer.

Post up if you'd be interested in a group purchase for glass moonroofs! Fit and finish would be OEM. If there is enough interest (30 or more) I will do all the R&D necessary to make a kit that looks like it came direct from BMW.

I tried to call Webasto, they're closed right now. I called one of their retailers in California and they said that they don't have one. If you can find a place that will custom make the glass, I'll do everything from there.

The Webasto was for E36's that came without any sunroof.

I still have the beta glass sunroof and "hardware" I bought from DAN-NY-M398 if anyone wants it. Danny's "kit" actually worked, but it is a funky solution to an application which requires some elegant engineering to match the E36 build quality.

Also, as far as ultimachi's observation:

What is needed to customize this glass, is it just the cutting that is needed, can you guys make or post up a list of the areas in which help is needed that myself and others alike can see what we can help with, I think that would really be a good way to complete this project. The glass is EXACTLY the same width and length, and appears to have the same curvature and position within the roof.

My point is.... maybe we need to be looking at a retro-fit kit to put an existing sunroof into our opening.

I am following this thread intently with the hopes that it will progress further than this same topic did 3(+/-?) years ago...has anyone verified that the actual dimenions and curvature of the e39 moonroof match the e36? Does the control swith panel from the e39 swap directly into the e36? If not, does the wiring of the e39 sunroof motor match the wiring of the e36 switch (will all the functions operate with the older switch?) The sunroof swap in a vw corrado/passat requires shims to bring the passat sunroof up to the same level as the corrado roofline...what type of modifications/additions will be required in the e36/e39 swap(if any)?...If it were not for a lack of workspace (apartment living sucks sometimes) I would be happy to try to resolve some of these questions using my own car as a guinea pig. Good luck guys! If there is anything I can do to help...shout out.

Sorry man, but I was a bit rash to think I would have the time and resources to do this on my own. My life needs have changed over the last year, and a 5-series fits those needs.

If you'll read the thread, all we need is someone that can manufacture glass or lexan to spec, and we've got an e36 kit.
