View Full Version : Potholes Sighting
Astroboy 12-28-2006, 10:10 PM Rennwerkes, Thrlls, Beasty,
With the recent heavy downpours/:rain, there's a pretty decent sized pothole that just "surfaced" going townbound below Kamehame Ridge just before going down the Kamiloiki hill. It's not the same one that was plaguing us for a while and that was just filled, but rather another one just nearby to it....Head's up!!!!

Mahalo Astro!
However, I usually go the Blow Hole way! :redspot
The Beastmaster 12-29-2006, 01:28 AM Thanks, but I rarely go into Kalama Valley.

Hey Astro, thanks for the tip.
I started going the blow hole way when pot holes started showing up all over the place. It's sad the Couty or State for that matter can't even do something simple like keep up with these pot holes when it's slow. Sounds like basic core functions and they've got dedicated crews to do this! Can you imagine what it'll be like when the rain comes more often???
I usually take that small side street the runs past the Board of Water Supply to get to my office building and the pot holes there took well over 4-5 months to get fixed and those were HUGE!
Oh well...
The Beastmaster 12-29-2006, 04:10 AM Isn't it the DAGS crew that is supposed to fix those potholes? :D

In all seriousness, if it was, they'd be fixed!
Nope, it's the DOT crews.
thrlls 12-29-2006, 01:16 PM DAGS/DOT...how about the DOIT crew! :D

Oops, sorry, miscalculated the location. It is actually half way down the hill...:embarrasm
P.S. I thought it was the C & C crews that do the city roads...:dunno

Almost in line with The Bus stop with covering by the school.
That hole is getting deeper too!

Yeah, C&C for county roads and DOT for State roads.
gsn794 01-08-2007, 05:14 AM for those of you who get off of Ewa bound H1 on to Kapiolani, beware of a major crater in the right hand lane just as you're trying to merge. Very big and nasty.
gmhl10 01-08-2007, 05:44 PM Major pothole warnings for those who drive out of your driveway.
Haha. Unfortunately, it seems like that here in Hawaii a lot now.
In Seattle, the 4 seasons weather, salting the roads, the continuous rain... but the roads are still way better than here in Hawaii. And they definitely don't half-ass it there when they repave.
Even the road that they repaved near my street (Makiki St.)... They did a poor job. Sure, the road is all smooth and whatnot, but I still have to swerve to avoid potholes. The reason is that they did a horrible job with the manhole covers. Now there's a big dip where the manhole covers are because they didn't accomodate. :(
You think it's due to the salinity in the rainwater that makes the road break up here more than Seattle?

I think in general it's just the crappy work that is done.
The City Auditor identified the crappy work they do and I think they are still doing the same crappy work.
In general, roads that are not heavily used should last for a really long time. Alot of the wear and tear on the main roads is due to heavy trucks but there's really no excuse for the smaller roads for being in such bad condition.
gsn794 01-08-2007, 07:23 PM we have the highest gas taxes in the country (we're #1, we're #1!). Where the hell is all of that money going? As far as I can tell, very little of it makes it into road work.
DesmoBob 01-09-2007, 12:38 PM OT: A few days ago there was a show on discovery or discovery science channel on the Autobahn. Understandably potholes are absolutely out of the question on a road where speeds approach 200mph. The asphalt they use is something like 25 inches thick, compared to our yankee freeway asphalt, which they said is about half that. Undoubtedly all non-federal roads are even less than that, and of a lower quality.

I saw that one too!
It's an amazing documentary.
Did you see how seriously they take something as simple as cleaning road signs?
The Germans take a very common sense approach to road safety. Same with safety checking their cars. If there's excessive rust on the car you can't drive it or if there's alot of smoke being produced. What I understand is that they pull you over and you have to tow the car to have it fixed. No if's and or but's, fix your car or you can't drive an UNSAFE car. Gee, how simple is that?

Ughh, hate those frickin manhole holes
I think also they may not be using the best quality (and more $$$) asphalt. Supposedly the State DOT has been trying new types and will be using a better type in the upcoming Nimitz Hwy fix

It goes to the DOE for the schools. Couldn't you tell? :stickoutt
bimbum 01-10-2007, 02:02 AM my car makes a lousy pickup truck :p pothole sightings? about 10 zillion muddy water filled ones on Puuiki!
gsn794 01-10-2007, 05:54 PM I dunno. I've never had any children (that I know of :D ) so I don't have any experience with the schools here. I know a bunch of my coworkers have their kids in various private schools though...

Nope, sorry, City and County doesn't have anything to do with the schools and the State gas tax you pay goes directly to the DOT, not into the general fund.
PCP JR 01-15-2007, 02:47 PM Bump (no pun intended) to mention that I confirmed this with the US Post Office:
Yes, the potholes on the Bingham Street Exit right as you exit H1 have their own Zip Codes.
I think the residents installed them to slow traffic coming off the freeway, as they're a bit too perfectly square... :)
The Beastmaster 01-15-2007, 05:18 PM Kawaihae Street has started to resemble a road from Beirut.

Beirut with an emphasis on the "rut" part...
Same for Ala Moana Blvd fronting Comp USA... That bit is so bumpy I detour around the back of Comp USA.

that stretch of Ala Moana from South street to Coral, has been crappy on and off for the last 15-20 years, maybe longer... :eyecrazy
