an E36 M3?? It's been bothering me a lot lately. I really want and E36 ///M, but I also cherish my E39 dearly. What do you guys think?

well - two very different cars. Get both!

upgrade to a 540i/6 its fast as the E36 M3 with more room inside. then SC it if you want to go even further.

I had an e36 M3 and recently moved to a 540/6. The only thing I miss about the M3 is the LSD. The open diff on the 540 makes it a little more tail happy. I haven't gotten it out on an Auto-X course yet (winter in the midwest), but the 540/6 feels VERY nimble for a car of its size. You will also miss the extra wheelbase when cruising at "spirited" speeds. Actually, you may not...I'm constantly afraid of getting a ticket because 100mph in the 540 feels like 70 did in the M3.

That said, I did really love my e36 M3...I just needed something more practical but didn't want to lose too much sportiness.

I think it depends on what you want? nice more comfortable ride (e39) or sharp razor edge/more direct feel (e36). I have an e39 now but I from time to time really miss the handling of e36, but I do like the nicer more comfortable ride of my e39. HTH

after reading the pro's and con's of E36 M's and thinking constantly about my decision.... I'm deciding to keep my 5er and continue modding it. Thanks for everyone's input. you guys made me think that much harder on my choice to keep it. So... stay tuned for my upcoming mods. :devillook

Yeah - around the city a driver's race in a straight line but the 540 would pull away on the freeway.

that's a beautiful 528i Alex! definately keep it and post pics of new mods.

lol, i went from an e36 m3 to my e39 540 and now im kicking around the same thing!! i know where theres a cherry 95 sitting in a garage that belongs to a woman whos husband passed away and left her the car. it's beautiful but some of his last words were "don't let it go for less than 15k", suffice to say its not worth close to that even with the shape its in.

The E46 M3 is definitely faster, the E36 M3 is a little slower

good idea on keeping the 5'er. I would have done the same thing. But hey, if you do decide you want to sell her, I will take good care of her. You can trust me.

+1 more. I really think you should get the M3 and keep the 5er. The M3 is too much fun to pass up :D.

there's something about the bmw 6's that i don't get in the v8's. is it just me or does someone else feel this too. they r more free revving, more fun to race, more even power band.

i have driven 540's. i did for a weekend before i turned to my 528i. yea the v8's very torquey and very quick, i just loved the sound and feel of the 6 tho.

e36 has a beautiful engine, but the e36/e46 chassis are too small and not as smooth as a 5, yes bigger car, smoother it is.....

i'm keeping my e39 stock, and prolly getting a cheap old e36 coupe for the track.

First of all you have a great looking e39, hard to beat.
When I was looking for a daily driver I drove E36 and E46 M3s.
Both are great cars but I think the E39 is the best for daily use.
The E46s are depreciating crazy which scared me away, plus only doors
The E36 we too similar to my E30 and as I get older I find it nice to have more luxury on a daily commute.

I am going through the same dilemma as the OP. I really want another M3, already own an E30 M3, and to get it I will have to sell my 540iA. I got as far as washing the car and taking pictures of it, but still debating whether I should sell or not.

I also want to sell my e39 for either a clean e36 m or a dirty e46 m or eaven an e39 M5

I would go for the e39 M5. Why go to an e36 M3 unless you are going to track it. The e46 M3s are everywhere and similar in price as the M5s, nice car fast, sporty, but the M5 is where it is at IMHO. Good luck with decision. You could also upgrade to the 540i/6.
