View Full Version : Saturn Sky Redline Roadster... Wow what a car
hotimportknight 12-27-2006, 05:52 AM So my uncle comes over from Minniapolis for the holidays, and brings his brand new sky redline, the first one in minnesota, he hands me the keys and says have fun, take it out for the night. Holy crap. That is definately not a normal saturn. 1 the looks.. Absolutely stunning car, midnight blue exterior, black interior, every thing flows so well inside and out. 18" chrome rims. This thing gets looks like you wouldnt believe driving down the streets of our smaller town in central wisconsin (20k people). Girls in an explorer waving and smiling... what im getting at is this thing looks like an exotic roadster. And it definately has the speed to match, its no super car ferrari speed or any thing, but damn its quick for the price. I think he got it for 29,795 or some thing around there. I would have to guess that it gets to 60 in almost the same time as the E46 M3 i drove. 1st gear the turbo didnt even kick in unless it was in competition mode i think, 2nd gear the turbo boosted a bit, but 3rd and up 20 psi of boost slamming you back in your seat. in competition mode though i thinkit was boosting hard the whole time, cause it went like a bat out of hell from a stoplight blowing away a car full of girls that were checking out the car. Im thinking about that if a sky redline was availible I may consider getting one for what i was looking to spend on a 2001-2 M3... all around HOT car!
moroza 12-27-2006, 10:24 AM Interesting...have you driven the Solstice/Sky (NA), and can you give a comparison? The NA versions seem to be universally (on this board, at least) derided as being cheap, weak, and rattly and not very good at anything except for handling.

Then they hop into their E36 318 that is falling apart.

So youre saying you dont know how to drive an E46 M3?
Sky Redline 0-60 5.5
E46 M3 0-60 4.8
Its still a Saturn. I will always see them as tupperware on wheels
clevertd 12-27-2006, 12:04 PM but 3rd and up 20 psi of boost slamming you back in your seat.
At first I was going to say :rolleyes, but according to edmunds.com, says its boost peaks around 18psi. Man, what I would do with that kind of boost...

First off.. the Sky is not really a saturn, but a rebadged Opel.. so it has some german pedigree going on and it is metal, not plastic.
For the second, the Sky is also a roadster, so any speeds you are traveling at are bound to feel faster than they really are. In a hardtop (especially one as nice as the E46 M) you really do not get a sense of how fast you are traveling, you are more isolated than in a roadster. Plus you sit lower in the sky, that helps a lot
SilverBeam 12-27-2006, 01:34 PM I still want to test drive one. I've gotten in one twice at dealershpis and haven't driven one yet. THe top design is just sooooooo bad. I knwo there is no way I'd get one because of the top design, so why even bother?
step one: unlatch
step two: open trunk
step three: lower top
step four: close trunk
then you don't have a trunk! ANd it takes you a good 30 seconds to lower it. Please! You can drop the top on the superior Miata in about a third of the time. Just doesn't seem worth the hastle in this day and age.

like you could tell the difference in .7 of a second to 60...
Mad Machine 12-27-2006, 03:19 PM like you could tell the difference in .7 of a second to 60...
That was my next shot in this argument
mbanks21 12-27-2006, 03:31 PM Fine, maybe I jumped the gun a little. Its just very hard for me to take a saturn seriously after 10+ year of building slow crappy econoboxes. I would still take a miata or a Z4 over a sky. Ill withhold further judgement until the car has been out for a few years.
mitchelrl 12-27-2006, 04:20 PM I'd debadge the Sky...boosting 18 pounds from the factoria with some Opel Heritage commands respect in my opinion, it just makes me wonder why they changed the name. They'd sell twice as many if they had the Opel badge.
///M3 12-27-2006, 04:21 PM Yes you can feel .7 seconds 0-60. Its like the comparison of a E36 M3 and a E46 M3. There is a noticeable difference there. Especially if you have driven, and are familiar with one of them. I know I did.
Rez90 12-27-2006, 05:06 PM its boost peaks around 18psi. Man, what I would do with that kind of boost...
I'm not gonna tell you what my car is boosting to...............:D
robisconfusedd 12-27-2006, 05:15 PM my friend pug has the solstice GXP, which is the same thing.. and DAMN its fast, it pulls in any gear!! haven't taken it in the twisties though yet..
rallybird 12-27-2006, 05:16 PM I've driven a solistice gxp, it's the same as the sky redline, not as fast as the #'s are showing. An M3 is a totally different type of vehicle. The GXP has NO room in it, you can't even get a set of golf clubs in the trunk with the top down.
Mad Machine 12-27-2006, 05:52 PM simple. Opel still has a bad reputation here in the states. When GM brought them over, the poor cars were so smogged they could not get out of their own way. Which was a shame, the GT was far too pretty to be saddled with a puny engine and the Kadett and Manta were fine little coupes.
My father brought over from Spain a 1968 Opel Kadett Rally. This was the Homogulation special opel built that year to go rallying. One of 500 built. It was just a used car when he bought it in spain and brought it over, but it was VERY quick and would outrun everything in it's class when taken to the track.
Shame he sold it in 1980 for next to nothing. They are almost worth a full hundred grand now. It was probably the ONLY one in North America
Alpine torque 12-27-2006, 08:18 PM yes, the design really looks like an Opel
windnsea00 12-27-2006, 08:21 PM Damn, I wish I could cruise around out here in a Saturn and get waved to by girls.
BMVV4Life 12-27-2006, 08:29 PM It's typical GM. Take a car sold in another market, rebadge it and sell it in the US...Hello Pontiac GTO, Solstice, Saturn Sky. A friend of mine has a NA solstice and it looks good and thats about it. Personally I'd take a Miata any day. Or (best case sanerio sp??) buy a used e46 ///M!!!!
Mad Machine 12-27-2006, 08:38 PM actually the Solstice was designed for the American Market from the beginning. Shame about the top design though. Who thought that one up?
NobleForums 12-27-2006, 08:45 PM I'd take the NA version and go with an aftermarket turbo. That's a better bang for the buck path for me. The sky looks great though, nothing like the ugly miata.
Roffle Waffle 12-28-2006, 12:14 PM or if you can stand an automatic, get a crossfire srt6 for $30k, and keep up with e46 m3s
mbanks21 12-28-2006, 12:44 PM or if you can stand an automatic, get a crossfire srt6 for $30k, and keep up with e46 m3s
I hope you mean a high mileage used one cause they start at $50K
Boosted2003 12-29-2006, 09:24 PM I hope you mean a high mileage used one cause they start at $50K
Yeah, my mom has N/A crossfire. Not bad car, but not perfect. I am 6'2" and the car is to small for me to drive comftably.
The SRT6 Crossfire is lacking a LSD. I bet it loose few tenths of second in the 1/4 mile too if it had one.
Rear end looks kind of cheap...

NobleForums 12-31-2006, 10:09 PM It's the chrome that makes it look cheap and gaudy.
renemesis 12-31-2006, 11:51 PM No it's not.
NobleForums 01-01-2007, 06:07 AM Pulling the chrome off changes the look pretty substantially.

Jordan94530i 01-02-2007, 06:39 AM see the car in person, the rear end is so damn low... who ever sees the laying down on the ground rear view anyway? you see it in person you are looking down on the rear tailights.
the car is a little too high though, it has about an inch maybe a little more of fender gap that needs to go away. the cars are sweet for what they are designed for, and that is top down fun.

Yes, but the Sky still has a lot of stylistic woes to overcome, such as the K-mart diffuser, the Acura TLesque exhaust, and even the tacky Saturn badging itself.
You are right about the chrome removal cleaning up the look a bit, though.
moroza 01-11-2007, 07:11 PM Reminds me of the front of the E60.
SaamS 01-12-2007, 09:48 PM Just want to put my 2 cents in, I went to check this car out, and as nice as it may look on the exterior, the interior is complete junk. I mean complete junk. The plastic looks cheap, and its extremely tacky looking. It really turned me off from the car.

i have driven the solstice, but it is pretty much the same car. it has the typical american econocar interior, even the steering wheel feels cheap. the performance on the other hand is pretty good based on the numbers, but my 9 year old car is equal with it, holds five people and feels nice to drive, go figure :rolleyes.
bird67 01-25-2007, 06:57 AM You guys are thinking about this all wrong. The question is not whether to go out and buy the Redline at retail right now. For that money there are far better choices. The real question is whether to go out and buy the Redline used in four or five years for $6500. Think Fiero and Reatta when it comes to resale value.
gmessori 01-25-2007, 11:02 AM Damn, I wish I could cruise around out here in a Saturn and get waved to by girls.
Chicks do not wave out here. After they finish tallying your net worth they might give you a smile, thats about it.
I went to the south to find my wife, the chicks out here just grate at my nerves.

And how they will get after the divorce.:help
Draven 03-08-2007, 01:51 PM go spend the extra 20k and get the V-8 Mallet conversion with the LS2 engine.. Mallet sells a turnkey version of either car for near 50k with BBK, coilovers, wheels, LS2 swap, and they claim it runs somewhere in the low 11s.
If u had to have one I just got spend the extra money and buy the Mallet version over the turbo model.
