View Full Version : 06 m5 vs. 69 Dodge charger
V10power 12-21-2006, 01:05 AM After a nice breakfast with my buddy and his two kids (6 and 9 years old) we jumped out onto the highway to head home and came to a red light. When next to me pulled up a 1969 blue charger. I looked at my buddy and said "I cant race I have the kids in the car" my buddy who has an 03 mustang cobra said "dont worry I race with the kids in the car all the time" I said again that I wasnt going to race". At this point the guy began revving the engine as I stared at his hood scoop which read 440 magnum, my buddy said "now you have to race he's calling you out" I was reluctant because of the kids but put the car in "M" mode and decided to wait and see if the guy launched.
When the light turned green the Charger launched hard and hooked up. By the time I realized that the game was on he had a half a car length on me, so I figured what the hell and I hit it hard and with all of the weight in the car I was able to launch with little wheel spin. by the time I was at the top of 1st gear we were neck and neck. As I popped the paddle shifter into second and glanced over at the driver his mouth and eyes were wide open as I walked right by him and I proceeded to put about three car lengths on him and I popped the shifter into 3rd.
At that point I glanced in the rear view mirror and saw the flashing lights of johnny law and let off. With the kids in the car I wasnt running so I pulled into the right lane in front of the charger and rolled up to the next light. The charger not seeing the cop pulled into the left lane for another run at it. At this point the cop pulled on the shoulder next to me and yelled at both of us to pull over into a parking lot. The kids at this point were screaming, crying and yelling that the were going to jail and were getting arrested. I thought for sure the cop was going to throw the book at me.
We calmed the kids down and the cop walked to the charger first talk to him then he came to me I gave him me papers. He came back with a seat belt ticket and said mery christmas I could have written you about a $1000 of tickets. I said thank you and he pulled away. The driver of the charger looked over and said "be thankful you were racing me" jumped in his car and drove off. It cost me $50 for the ticket and $20 to bribe each kid not to tell Mom for the kill but it was worth every dime to see the look on the guys face as I drove by.

V10power 12-21-2006, 01:18 AM I have other kill stories but that one is too funny not to share it is true and the next day I had to call the 6 year old because she had a nightmare that I was arrested. besides which part of the story you think is false the kill or the kids???
bineon 12-21-2006, 01:25 AM How did the Charger manage to get a year younger between you writing the topic text and the body text?
bineon 12-21-2006, 01:26 AM PS: If I ever meet you I'll put 4 bullets in your brain (if you even have one) for endangering someone other than yourself, kids at that. If it's true, I hope you die in a car wreck going 150 on a deserted interstate. If it's false, I call BS.

MagnumX 12-21-2006, 02:39 AM bs or not racing with kids?:nono
apollo322 12-21-2006, 03:00 AM Good story, and I believe you. Speeding in a straight line with kids in a car is not putting them in danger, so relax with the "bullets to the brain". besides, what kind of sicko even threatens such a thing?

So when a car pulls out in front of him going very slowly, he:
-Hits it head on, killing himself and the M5
-Swerves into:
The oncoming lane, hitting another car head-on, killing all people in it
Trees, wrapping his car around it and killing all inside plus 2 squirrels
The charger, killing everyone inside of it-Swerves into a ditch, flipping the M5 twice, killing everyone inside of it...
All I'm saying is that it's possible. Don't do stupid shit while there is anyone that might not be as stupid as you in direct danger.
Steiner 12-21-2006, 03:15 AM True or not it might be the funniest kill I've ever read. I'm imagining it and it's cracking me up. Kids are funny. I pulled into a parking spot last weekend at the mall. Two kids, probably 8 or 9 years old, stood with their mouths open as I parked. My wife's like "you've got some fans". I get out and one of them says "bro your Evo is f*cking sick". Out of nowhere his mom snaps and smacks him in the back of the head. My wife and I almost pissed ourselves.

I agree w/ you whole heartedly about street racing, but thats all
hypothetical...I mean all that could happen going the speed limit
I did however roffle at the squirrel part :rofl
bineon 12-21-2006, 03:31 AM :)
He never specified how fast he was going. Say the speed limit is 45, at 90 (twice that), your reaction times are 2(?) times as slow, your car has twice the velocity, and it will go 4 times as far through something, like the innocent tree-lurkers.

Dirty Bastid! But your right about how much difference there is between
speeds when try'n to avoid/stop for verilables in the road but I'd say 55 mph
will do it...like they say in Cannon Ball Run..."55mph is ridiculous, slow enough
to make you think your safe.....but fast enough to kill ya."

BS indeed. If it was indeed a running 69 Charger with a 440 it either has 375 or 390 HP....By the time you realized he was going, he would have been more than 1/2 car length. Also, those old Muscle cars do not hook up well, they sit and spin. All you could do is get a "chirp" out of your tires? Way too funny. UCMTSU

Ehh if it's just a straight-line I don't think it's a big deal but that's just me.
BTW how much did you have to spend to get that kind of power out of your EVO?
nicegsxr 12-21-2006, 01:35 PM Great story, and for those of you that is bitching about street racing, go punch yourself each time you speed or even tap the gas just a bit...I mean its a damm straight line...people dont buy a M5 to jerkoff in... well at least the e39 versions anyways :D .. with the new M in P500 mode.. I dont think it was really that hard to go fast for 2-3 gears, and besides his friend said it was ok... they are his kids hahaha :redspot

kc0433 12-21-2006, 02:34 PM All of this bashing cracks me up. Oh, so this would all be ok if no kids were in the car? How does that make sense? There is always someone else on the road, and you could possibly wreck into someone that DOES have kids in the car while you're racing without any kids in yours. I'm not condoning what the guy did, but threatening and talking smack like a bunch of little girls is funny. It's a big hypocrisy.

he said he was wrapping out second gear going onto a highway....i think you are over reacting just a touch

besides, the kids were all jacked up on mountain dew..
Cacatfish 12-21-2006, 03:23 PM Im sure there are a lot of more pressing dangers than a 1-3 gear straight line race with kids, for all the PTA moms out there.
What I am curious about is why the guy said you were "lucky to be racing him"? Maybe he is an off-duty cop or something? Wouldnt surprise me, they often seem to have some old 'merican iron lurking in the garage.

BMW5868 12-21-2006, 04:18 PM When i was a teen my friends dad had a 1969 dodge chyrsler imperial (440) and for his wife she had the grocery gether a 1969 dodge coronet 440 r/t . Needless to say we had a few burn out runs in the R/T. We could never get it to hook up with the stock tires (no posi) but if this guy is hooking up, it faster than he is stating especially against a full load like the M had. The M is what 12.4 1/4 trap at 115. Last time i heard a 440 -69 (375 hp - 3460 lb car)charger stock was hi 12's to low 13's with a trap about 103, maybe the guy strapped the hood onto a 318. Chysler published their Hemi charger as 12.1 out of the box in 1967 (that was with 14" bias ply tires). And he had the jump! I dont know? But - Dont race with the kids, anyway they will give you up every time maybe not today but soon!!!

You also implied the Charger driver was an off duty cop.
BTW, 0-60 at WOT in a 55mph zone with kids is perfectly okay. Don't know about your situation.
Bavarian Fan 12-21-2006, 11:33 PM That charger if stock is only 380-390 hp at the crank. The m5 is 500. The charger has a lot of weight and 4 speeds max again if it is stock while the gearing of the m5 is greater with 6 speeds. i see no reason to believe this is bs. about the kids yeah yeah its bad and all, but im sure they enjoyed it before the 5-0 came to the party

kaptinkrunch13 12-22-2006, 12:45 AM wow u guys are all so tight up. this is the kill section. don't get pissed when people post stories about racing. and why does everyone have to flame that this is bs 06 m5's have 500hp so it's not hard to believe it beat it when u claim the charger has 375-90.
anyways sweet kill dude. i love chill cops.
I dunno... I thought it was one of the better kill stories around. Nice cars compared to the usual e36 318 vs civic, good detail, written with real words and real grammar. Nice kill.
hwl328is 12-22-2006, 08:11 AM LOL at the morons saying they will shoot and kill someone for speeding with children in the car.
This section of the forum has gone straight to hell, in quite a quick fashion, too. Everyone here seems to be quite the hypocrite. There is no sense arguing with these people, though.
IMO I don't think a quick burst to 3rd gear is that bad, considering that the OP at the very end of 3rd gear would be hitting like 95-100 mph, and on the highway at that.
wasya_s4 12-22-2006, 12:11 PM i knew once he mentioned the kids, a punch of you speed pussies would chime with your 2 cents. this is a kill forum, what the hell are you going even reading this is you think that street racing is stupid.
P.S. what i hate the most is when people feel the need to remind you, "at 60mph, it takes xxx amount of distance to stop". this just reminds me of those online traffic courses one has to do. what they don't realize is that the m5 will stop faster from 100 mph than most cars from 30mph. speed and speeding is all relavent. one can get hurt just as easily walking down the street as driving fast.
qcdstick 12-22-2006, 12:27 PM Good kill, must be nice to have the M5 :-) Luckily the other guy aparently knew the cop too! My only comment would be the seat belt being not so smart, but I'll give you the bennift if the doubt and say you were wearing it and chose that ticket over the alternative :-)
AzzMan 12-22-2006, 01:36 PM It's just a 440, who would call BS on that? I mean, in this race. 318 vs Charger 440, no way.

Funny thing is, that american muscle car might be worth more than the M5 w/ the right specs. He's also lucky that is seemed to be a rebadged or very stock 440.
BMW5868 12-22-2006, 07:14 PM Your right about the M having 500 hp - but isnt there something about driver having to dial it in? otherwise its 400. Why would this guy be dialed in? The charger has a much lower torque band and by this account they would have been much closer. He was just coming off the hiway & on his way home so why would he be dialed in if he wasnt looking to run.
Good kill.
I think i still have and extra bullet lodged in my brain if anyone needs one - dick.

He did say he put it into "M" mode.
I know those SMGs have like 502993969346 modes.
BMW5868 12-22-2006, 09:06 PM OOPS I'm going to have to get the bullet out for sure now -- Motortrend -Inside, the M5 is somewhat stark, albeit at a high level. In addition to the love-it-or-hate-it iDrive, the quickest sedan from the Bavarian Motor Works offers a bewildering selection of setups. First, you must decide whether to change gears manually or automatically. That's an easy choice: in auto, the seven-speed SMG gearbox is still either unacceptably jerky or unacceptably slow. Second, you have to choose between 400 and 500 hp. Why? God only knows, but we suspect the engine always starts in four-fifths mode to curb its fuel consumption. Decisions three and four concern the shift speed (six to choose from) and the damper setting (three to choose from). What's next? Switch off stability control, or start fretting with iDrive? In total, there are twenty different settings that allow almost countless permutations. No, we didn't try them all. But we grew to like the combination of P500 (500 hp), M Dynamic Mode (heightened stability-control thresholds), EDC in normal damping mode, and S4 (fourth-fastest shift speed). You'll want to store your preferred mix and access it via the M button on the steering wheel. The M guys are just going to have to list all the setting that they are racing with - it could make for a very long thread.
for what its worth i've built and dynoed over 50 440's in the years I owned my shop. Bone stock rebuild they went between 395-435 HP at the crank. Add a cam, headers, and intake/750 holley and you have 515-545 easy. With porting, solid cam ,11-1 compression, I usually got about 600. I think a 68 charger goes about 4200 lbs
BMW5868 12-22-2006, 09:59 PM I looked this one up with chyrsler - stock they post 375hp - 3460 lbs.
The massive 440 RB was produced from 1966 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966) until 1978 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978), making it the last of the Chrysler big-blocks. From 1966 to 1971, it was conservatively rated at 375 hp (280 kW) with a single four barrel and from 1969 to 1971, 390 hp (291 kW) with three two barrels. Both motors could produce 425 to 435 hp (317 to 324 kW). The 440 was known as the Magnum in Dodges, the Super Commando in Plymouths and briefly as the TNT in Chryslers.
Interesting, quite a bit lighter than I guessed. What does a 06 M5 weigh??

V10power 12-24-2006, 02:43 PM I know It was horrible to race with the kids in the car and when we were pulled over I felt like the biggest jerk in the world. but as most would agree that driving down the highway at 80 in a minivan in traffic while talking on the cellphone with kids in the car is much more dangerous. then a quick launch to 75-90mph for about 10 seconds on a four lane divided road which is clear of cars, divided, and no place to enter the highway. The cop didnt think it was that bad and he saw the whole thing. Anyway I am not either is right but people do alot worse with kids in the car.
V10power 12-24-2006, 02:48 PM by the way although bmw says this car is electronically limited this car has never shut down at 155 it just keeps going. I weighed in at 4300 at the track with 3/4 of gas and loaded with luggage.
V10power 12-24-2006, 03:04 PM too answer the questions about the setup I have programed my set-up for drag race as the following ( I tried a few at the track and this got me the best results) 500hp mode, smg in 6 out of 6 ( when you are not in M mode you get only 5 transmission settings in normal day to day I have it in 3 out of 5 mode) and the suspension EDC on its softest setting. I do not use launch mode in the street because I end up in a cloud of smoke. when I launch I take my foot off the brake and when the light turns green I just mash the gas to the floor (taking the foot off the brake is important because the car keeps the brake on for a full second to prevent rolling) Unless it is cold the tires will spin for a second then hook and go. it ran a 12.68 at 113 using this method with a little better traction and less weight low twelves should be had consistently as for compliants with this car it took a good three weeks to get use to driving it smooth my only compliant is that if I roll slow and try to hammer the gas and the car is in say 3 gear in auto mode it takes a long time for it to get to first gear. the car has hung me out to dry in traffic a few times while it decides which gear to select.
BavariaMotorist 12-24-2006, 03:11 PM Wow that SMG sounds like it has a huge learning curve...
Rez90 12-24-2006, 03:14 PM Ehh if it's just a straight-line I don't think it's a big deal but that's just me.
BTW how much did you have to spend to get that kind of power out of your EVO?
i agree that if it's in a straight line it's not as dangerous as say a back road........but my point is more that aside from it being dangerous......what kindof example is he showing to the kids.........
god forbid...say one of those kids gets a car at 16 and on the first day he got his licence he goes and races someone and something horrible happens........know what his response will be "My dad races all the time, with me in the car............"
anyway, my evo..........lol........it cost me probably 10ish.....give or take a couple g's. I did it progressively and i also had a lot of parts from my first evo.....so it wasn't THAT bad............
bigcfromcinci 12-24-2006, 03:20 PM Sooo how many other people are sick of reading kill stories only to have a couple douchebags ruin a thread b/c they want to nag about what you should or shouldn't be doing.
There should be a pop up when you enter the forum reading:
"IF YOU HAVE A SANDY VAGINA DO NOT ENTER... ILLEGAL AND DANGEROUS ACTIVITY OCCURS IN THIS FORUM"
LOL......It's like a daily occurence. Don't like it, don't view the thread. :D
BMW5868 12-26-2006, 02:39 PM The best time i have been able to come up with is 12.4 @ 116 but i have seen everything from 12.4 to 13.6 so do the setting have more to do with the quickness of the car or would you say its stays more with the driver?
V10power 12-26-2006, 05:47 PM Learning and trying the settings is the way to go. I know this car will pull low 12's I just ran it three times, in the mags they probably get a zillion runs. I have been drag racing and road racing cars for 15 years I would love to take credit for decent runs but anyone can run at least 12.5o's in this car with just a little bit of practice. I think this is what makes this car so incredible, and for everyone wondering on the steering wheel there is a button that says "M" when you push it the car automatically goes into the settings which you desire most for racing, so it only takes a millisecond to get the car ready to run.
C P Squared 12-26-2006, 06:09 PM I have other kill stories but that one is too funny not to share it is true and the next day I had to call the 6 year old because she had a nightmare that I was arrested. besides which part of the story you think is false the kill or the kids???
im just wondering, where in Neptune do you live, i was in Belmare the other day and say a new red m5, looked beautiful, that today i was the same car and about 5 minutes after that a e39 m5 in silver.
I live in Brick, NJ just wondering whether or not that was you
Thats M Life 12-26-2006, 06:41 PM damn that sounds like a fun run!
All of you hipocrites need to cram it...While you may have never raced with kids in the car i can GUARENTEE you have raced on a public street or even just sped by a car that had kids in it and you were endangering kids just the same. Not too mention if he had just got into 3rd he was barely going over 70 im sure...I get passed by minivans doing 80+ all the time and aholes in their pick up trucks speeding that if they needed to stop they couldnt if their life depended on it. The m5 on the other hand is an uber handling machine that would stop on a dime :D Besides the charger double dog dared him...couldnt punk out infront of the kids
and the comment about the kids growing up to 16 and racing was idiotic...every damn teenager that gets a sports car races it! And hardly any of them relate it to their parents racing :rolleyes Teenagers are stupid and dont evaluate risks so if that kid gets a sports car they are going to race no matter what they did when they were kids
V10power 12-26-2006, 07:10 PM I have a silver one tinted out. I am usually banging down the roads between red bank and toms river.
Russ[] 12-26-2006, 10:47 PM So when a car pulls out in front of him going very slowly, he:
-Hits it head on, killing himself and the M5
-Swerves into:
The oncoming lane, hitting another car head-on, killing all people in it
Trees, wrapping his car around it and killing all inside plus 2 squirrels
The charger, killing everyone inside of it-Swerves into a ditch, flipping the M5 twice, killing everyone inside of it...
All I'm saying is that it's possible. Don't do stupid shit while there is anyone that might not be as stupid as you in direct danger.
I flipped a cavalier 4 times doing 90 (a friend owns a few hundred acres and we make-belive rally out there with junk cars) and came to a rest on the drivers side agianst a tree. I walked away fine.
Not saying I wasn't lucky though.
Deuuuce 12-27-2006, 08:49 PM Nothing wrong going WOT on that divided, straight, dry, no access highway to 10mph over the limit (or so).
But WHO wasn't wearing the seatbelt? Geeze, hitting the brakes in THAT car with no seatbelt itself could mean kissing that windshield, HARD.
V10power 12-28-2006, 01:56 AM I was wearing my seat belt it was a b/s ticket the m5 will keep dinging loud untill for about 5 min until you put it on.
