Definitely don't waste your time with a 42" DLP, at that size/price a 42" plasma is not out of reach(and looks about a bajillion times better to my eyes).
The 56" could be alright if you can live with rear projection downfalls.
... what are the big downfalls of the projection... I thought dlp was supposedly better than plasma?
Iron Chef 12-19-2006, 11:13 PM Just get it online.

I recently got a 62" Toshiba DLP for 2400.....99/month, no interest till its paid off. They were offering free upgraded warranties as well.

They have a poor viewing angle, especially compared to a plasma(which is essentially the same at any angle due to it actually emitting light from the plasma pixels), and tend to wash out a bit more in direct light IMO(again due to being a projection setup).
Plasma has its own issues, like burn-in, but I've never had a problem on mine. Supposedly it was much more of a problem of the first plasmas 4+ years ago.
The cost of bulbs makes the rear projection stuff about the same price as a plasma over the course of a few years.

huh?? cost of dlp and plasma same over a few years? I dont think so. DLP bulbs run about $200. Replacement interval is like 8 years under normal viewing intervals. How much is a 62" plasma?

I was thinking more in the 50" range since that's the common plasma size.
No way you're going to get 8 years out of a DLP bulb with frequent watching and on/off cycles.
Anyway, go to a store that has all sorts of display types and let your eyes do the talking. I personally can't stand how DLPs look, but apparently a lot of people either don't see what I do, or just plain like 'em...
SecretAznSauce 12-20-2006, 08:36 PM +1 why get a big ol box? the sharp 50" LCD or the mitsu is really nice. My friend just bought a LG 50" plasma for 2300
I'd also look at Costco. You can return the set at any time if you are not satisified with it. I'm not advocating abusing the policy like some and using it as a rental service, but I think the Costco membership is a small price to pay to ensure you're happy with a large purchase(plus they have good cookies there!).
The Panasonic 50" 50PX6U plasma is about $2200 from there. They have a 60"+ Samsung DLP there that looks ok for a monster box(all black).
I'm not a huge LCD fan either unless your viewing area has a ton of ambient/direct light, but they can look good in certain environments compared to other displays.
I'm all about good black levels and a very uniform and "punchy" image, so I guess that's why I go for plasmas. Front projection is also ultra pimp if you can swing it, but it can't be your primary display for a variety of reasons.
atizzle 12-20-2006, 10:21 PM I just cant see paying $8k for a 1080p plasma. But I think you guys are talking about 1080i/720p, right?
You wont be able to take full advantage of blue ray/hd-dvd with that 1080i set.
i'm just lookin at getting away from a tiny pos sony crt tv. I'm gunna look at the 42 samsung plasma it's only 100 more than the dlp counterpart at that onecall place.
I have 1080p monitors in my headrests thanks to x to the z.
Back in reality, I'm happy with my plasma, but if I was buying a TV for a large room right now, it'd be DLP.

Dood, I've had a plasma for years! I bought it when I was working in Canada and was bored and was making more money than I knew what to do with.
Wait till you see the hoe I'm looking at now, it's rollin' on 22s. They'll be stolen in 2 weeks or less.

22's? i guess thats ok as a general baseline. But you want to roll on someting closer to your age. Id say 26's would be more appropriate.

You realize it's impossible to resolve 1920x1080 resolution at the distances most people sit from their TV, with a few exceptions on people that sit really close to 60"+ sets.
Resolution is not everything, although the marketing people have successfully convinced most people that is it. It's just the next thing they can do for the cheapest, and it's easy to put a number to it, so that's why they're really pushing it.
atizzle 12-21-2006, 10:37 AM have you watched HD-DVD before? or blue ray? If you haven't, you need to see that next to a regular HD station (1080i). I thought it was a significant difference.
yeah i saw iceage2 and teh ricky bobby the other day at best buy on the 1080p bluray setup they had demoing it was really amazing but that shits just too much $$$

That just proves resolution isn't the difference, it's the bandwidth/compression difference. 1080i at 60fps is more information than 1080p at 24fps(Blu-ray). HD-DVD only outputs 1080i right now anyway.

Key phrase there. Otherwise you wouldn't see the difference.
Davidss 12-27-2006, 02:52 AM I just bought the HL-S5086W today and am really happy with it. Circuit city has them online for $1199 (plus you have to buy a $100 gift card), and you can pick it up/return it to the store...
RoadsterMike 12-27-2006, 12:02 PM That's 46.00 cheaper than my cost from the factory....good deal...buy it!

+1 on the Mitsu - Go to Fry's, they have some really good deals going. I just got a 62" LCD for $1400 and a 5yr warranty. Model # WD62531 if you're interested.
