View Full Version : Pain the chrome trim today:
E34 530 12-18-2006, 09:59 PM Trim came out great. I can't really show detail with my $100 crappy camera, but it came out much better than expected. Extremely happy with the results.

Not really, just make sure you sand well and clean off the trim with some rubbing alcohol before finally spraying. Oh and apply a few layers of primer.

Im getting a donor set of trim this winter to do the same thing. Tape worked well, but I want a smoother finish. What paint and clear coat did you go with.
PS: you should do the trim on the inside as well, right by the window on the door panel.
Frost 12-18-2006, 10:07 PM Was it hard taking the trim off, and what did you use to get it off?

Go to Wal-Mart and get Krylon primer and auto paint Flat black (with rust-stopper just for a pre-caution. I was afraid that once I sanded the chrome I would be susceptible to rust.) I didn't use a clear. I prefer the "flat" finish.

+1
How many clips did you break if you broke any. I tried that and was too scared to break any clips.

A flat head screwdriver and my two arms. ;)

You WILL break every single clip for the upper trim.

:confused What blue tape?
atl530i 12-18-2006, 10:21 PM Damn :(
Blue painters tape so you do not scratch the paint or anything.

BlessedHellRide 12-19-2006, 07:28 AM Looks good, +1 on the flat look, no clear. matches the rest of the trim on the car. Did you do your grill, too? If not, consider it.
When I did mine, I didn't break a single clip in getting the trim off. Once I got the rear door curved trim off, I slid all the clips down the channel to the open end using a flat scraper. Just be careful is all.
teufel530 12-25-2006, 02:15 PM Definitly would love to see before and after photos.
Termist 12-25-2006, 02:50 PM Seems like the same exact stuff I used.
