View Full Version : X5 vs. HS kids in 3 series
theLender 12-14-2006, 09:27 PM There's a nice 3-mile stretch on the approach to the Tappan Zee Bridge (which is another 3 miles) on I-287 coming from Westchester on which I can do a nice 130+ run.
Heading back mid-day, somewhat overcast, I'm doing 80 or 90 but some jerk high school kids come up next to me on the left and just jam it. The road certainly wasn't clear but definitely clear enough to do a little spirited driving, so I took them up on the offer.
They were forced behind me so I pushed it to 120, at which point they pulled around me on the left, came into my lane, and jammed on the brake! Definitely thought accident was imminent but the braking system performed as expected and took me down to 60.
Not to let them get away with that (they were now a few cars ahead of me in a lane to my right), I found a nice opening in the farthest left lane and just let it rip. Hit 130 on the Tappan Zee Bridge, saw the kids try to gain in my rear view mirror but they got blocked in.
On speed, they were certainly ballsy. On technique, though, they were pretty rough and didn't seem ready to handle even a 3 series at such speeds. Oh well, it was fun to win (and to slow down enough before the end of the bridge to avoid getting ticketed by the cops who sit there).
BavariaMotorist 12-14-2006, 09:32 PM Good kill, and that was REALLY stupid of them to jam the brake with a full size SUV behind them going 120.
How the hell did you hit 130 on the tappan zee? I can't even hit 60 on it.
That is my favorite stretch of road to go fast on but EVERY time I drive it, I see like 5 troopers with a victim on the side of the road, so I back off.
Wow. I know exactly what your talking about, that area is great if theres no rush hour traffic. On my way up to school ( I go to Bryant University in RI) I take 287-Tapanzee. Last time I actually ran into a new Chevy Trailblazer SS. Its a fast truck, I was in my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 litre limited, and we were going at it on the Tapenzee, the whole time I was thinking, man I hope they dont have camera's on this bridge hahha.
theLender 12-14-2006, 11:24 PM Yeah it's a good stretch but always have to watch out on the curve before the bridge and the area after the bridge, just before the Nyack exit.
130 on the bridge actually wasn't too hard because I had a nice stretch of the left lane to myself but wasn't sustained for long because of traffic...good fun regardless though, it's a great straightaway of a bridge (and a great view when you're not doing 100+ ;-)
re: cops, I grew up in this area and neither I nor my parents have ever seen anybody get stopped *on* the bridge...i really can't imagine how they could...but you're definitely right in that you have to be careful on the approaches (both sides of the river)
on an unrelated note, i did see a trooper cross the bridge once and it was a hilarious sight because there were four lanes of cars behind him and not one person willing to go faster than his 55MPH...it looked like he had a massive entourage
m3lowrider 12-14-2006, 11:32 PM Yea, hitting 130 on the tappanzee is like whoaa
Walked U 12-14-2006, 11:51 PM Good kill, and that was REALLY stupid of them to jam the brake with a full size SUV behind them going 120.
+1 Hate people like that.
theLender 12-15-2006, 01:46 AM yeah, it was really bad that they hit the brakes like that. i rarely 'race' like that and while I do my share of quick driving, that was the only time i ever seriously thought an accident was imminent. i did pat myself on the back though because i stayed calm, gave the best driving response i could, and hoped that my car would answer my call! :-)
BavariaMotorist 12-15-2006, 11:47 AM That's why I want to buy a tank (h1 alpha) and put a big ass titanium-steel bar in the front that deploys much like an air bag does on impact, that way their car will get mashed, the bar will retract into its compartment, and I will drive away unscathed.
Some day I will engineer this technology!
silver3er 12-15-2006, 12:07 PM Wow you got lucky! Yeah Tappan Zee is fun to rip across when theres no traffic. But I'd never have the balls to race at 120 in that area, there are so many cops! Good kill!
BMW335i 12-15-2006, 10:22 PM Cool, I guess. But take it easy man, you still have an SUV even though it IS a BMW.

Well, this road isn't very twisty or anything. It has some slight bends but that's all :) It's about four lanes wide approaching the bridge
Wisky 12-16-2006, 01:23 AM Thats def a fun strech of road, I lose all self control in the M3 and rip past it at 100 MPH all the time.
98silver328i 12-16-2006, 03:30 AM dumbass hs kids
+1. The worst are the hs fags that have civics and think their cars can do a 13 sec. 1/4 mile.
Storamin 12-16-2006, 11:05 AM no, the worst are the hs kids with bmws who think their cars can do 13 sec 1/4 mile...
BavariaMotorist 12-16-2006, 12:03 PM The worst are the hs kids with big trucks that think they own the road
BMW335i 12-16-2006, 04:44 PM there all dicks
Well said!

Was that directed towards me? Just wondering, because in hs, I did own two "big trucks" (as I'm sure one can see from my sig).
