I'm moving to McKinney, TX in January. I've never lived in a large city or near a large city. I've never thought too much about one of my vehicles being stolen or broken into. I've been fortunate enough not to have to worry about that. I've looked at some crime and theft statistics and the Dallas area does not look good. I'm leaving a duplex with a garage and moving into an apartment in what appears to be a nice part of town. I own 2 cars and I'm mostly worried about my 240sx because its very easy to break into and or steal. I don't want to put an alarm on it because I am building it as my track car. Should I invest in a storage unit to park it in? Or should I just get full coverage on it and cross my fingers?

should be fine as long as you live on west side of McKinney, I live in Allen (4miles) south of McKinney, and there is no crime here at all. And since there is no crime here, police loves to write tickets.

My girlfriend and her friend were riding in a Boxster last year looking for a mexican restarunt on a Sunday afternoon (read: hungover) on the other side of the tracks (which is where the good mexican restarunts are). They got pulled over and questioned by the cops because they thought they were there to buy drugs. After a lecture they told them it wasn't safe for white girls to be across Hwy 5. Welcome to crime in McKillme

If you want to live in the Northern part of DFW, your best bet as far as low crime is to check small towns such as Flower Mound, Highland Village, Shady Shores.

Those towns are all right off to I-35E. in Denton County & they're close to Lake Lewisville.

in other words.....in the middle of nowhere

McKinney is not bad as long as you're on west side of 75.

Hidden fuel cutoff switch?

some apartments come with a garage for an extra 50-100 bucks. I doubt anyone would touch the m3 but the 240 has a following behind it and could get ripped off in the best of neighborhoods. I would check into the optional garage

McKillme, West of 75, don't cross hwy 5......

I was hoping you guys would say nah... There's nothing to worry about. Now I'm thinking maybe I should go ahead and wire in some hidden fuel pump cut off switch and put it in a storage unit/garage thing.

I don't get to pick where I live because this is an internship and the company has already rented an apartment for me until August. I was hoping it would be a slightly safe bedroom community to Dallas.

I doubt its bad but the 240 seems like a highly sought after car to be stolen/or to be messed with so it probably doesn't matter what area its in. If its not in a garage/secured area the chances are probably good.

yea man i live in highland village right on lake lewisville. absolutely no crime here. i leave my 325i unlocked all the time...actually i rarely ever lock the thing unless im in lewisville for work at starbucks (im 17). the cops are really annoying bc there are way to many for our small city and they have nothing to do but stop you for not stopping for at least 3 seconds and stuff like 3mph over the speed limit and shit. well its not really that bad but it seems like it haha.

Take it from a fellow Okie. It doesn't matter what part of DFW you are in there will always be crime. You probably won't have to worry about too many drive by's up there in McKinney but robbing and stealing goes on everywhere. I had my truck broken into 2 weeks after I moved down here. Of course I was living in da real hood and rolling around advertising, bumping two 15's. You learn to live with it, learn to be more cautious, and learn what neighborhoods are better than others. But until then I'd say get ya some good insurance and a garage. Especially if your apartment complex isn't gated. I don't even do gated complex's anymore unless I have a garage. So are you an OSU grad?

not yet an OSU grad. I decided to take work a co-op program at Fisher Regulators. I'll move back to Stillwater in August and 1 more year of school before I graduate.

I'm not so much worried about anybody breaking into my cars, I don't keep anything in them and I don't have an aftermarket stereo. The money is spent under the hood and on suspension. I just don't want to have the cars stolen. I'm considering more and more about getting a storage unit to put the nissan in. Or does someone have some garage space they would like to rent out? That would be nice.

Yea, there's a pretty big Nissan community down here, and unfortunately for theft reasons, a modded 240 is going to draw almost as much attention as a modded Civic.

I keep mine in my garage and park the M3 outside if there is no space heh.

Like others have said West side good, east side not so good.

I live on the west side and there are the occasional things here and there but on the east side it's an every day occurence.

I would invest in the storage for a few months (if you are on the west side) and see how things are where you live.East side equals long term storage.

I believe the El Lago apartments are the only apartments close to the highway on the west side, most of the other ones close to 75 are on the east side.

Really??? I had a couple friends & an ex-GF that lived there back when I was in HS, and it was a quiet community if I recall.

The only crime I remember committing was when we went cow tipping with some friends on Friday nights after the football games.

West side FTW... j/k... I live in Mckinney (Stonebridge) and love it. I moved from inside the 635 loop in Dallas (bad). East of 75 has some nice areas though. Good people and environment.

I would get the storage unit, the apartments themselves are good but just for the piece of mind.

It's a good location

Chipotle, Panera, Scotty P's,Pei Wei,Christina's,Cafe Brazil,Saltgrass,Roadhouse, Snuffers and a few more are all within walking distance.

and the best part of all, you have a car wash right next door:redspot

Sounds like you know the area pretty well. I actually used that car wash last month when I went down and interviewed and was taken to saltgrass for lunch. Saltgrass is very good btw.

Since you know so much about the area. Can you think of a storage unit place close by that you would feel safe keeping a car in?

There are a couple of self storage by the Ford and Chrysler Dealerships just up the street from you on the west side of 75, there is also a Republic Self Storage about 3-4 miles west of you on El Dorado.

I frequent quite a bit of restaurants but not to many self storage units so I really don't have any personal experience with them.

A good body shop in the area is Josh's Body on highway 5 on the east side, Corey is cool.

I take my car to Stett Performance in Plano for things I dare not try or can't figure out, Chad will help you out.
