A few months ago I blew a shift and over-revved my '01 325Ci. Caused enough damage for Moritz BMW in Arlington, TX to recommend replacing the engine entirely. I've finally got enough money together to have the necessary "operation" but was wondering if I should shop around some reputable shops in the DFW area to get the price down. The car has 33k miles and I plan to keep it for awhile, so I want it to be done right and still be covered under the factory warranty. If a shop other than a dealership replaces the engine, does the same warranty apply? Does anyone have any shops that they would recommend for this so I can call and ask them? BTW, after this incident I'm considering installing a UUC Short Shifter. Any hints or tips on the UUC or other short shifters? I don't run her ragged but I would like to have shorter throws and dependable performance.
thanks,
-Will

Will, I just got done with this. No matter what you do, do NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT take it to Carlton's Autohaus over in plano, texas. He's good and did a decent job with my car, but for the love of God he is a snake in the water, be careful!

Have u called Autoscope in Plano or Priore AutoCare(214 351 1986) near Love Field airport.
I was talking to Priore yesterday and he did mention that he had replaced an engine on another customers 328.

autoscope is nice actually. I have talked to them about various things ( short shifters, custom dyno chip) and they have excellent customer service. Probably a little pricey, but a rebuild is NEVER cheap.

Thanks for the info guys. After calling around I quickly found out that BMW won't warranty the engine unless a dealership does it. I talked to Moritz and asked about putting in the 3.0L from the 330 instead. $1000 more to do it and I would run into warranty problems. For example if the water pump were to go out, it wouldn't be covered. Thanks for the info about autoscope. I will definitely give them a call if I decide to go with the short shifter.

Will, $1000 more for the 3.0L doesnt sound too bad and if there arent any know problems on the engines that you would have to use your warranty in the future for, I'd go for it. Good luck.
