View Full Version : Anyone ever have problems with Ceramic coated pistons on their DD

I am debating whether to coat the pistons i am ordering. I've heard that the coating can last a very long time but i am unsure whether those estimates are from a DD car or a track car.

My car is going to be a mix of both track and DD (during summer) and i like the though of keeping the heat out of the pistons. My only concern would be having to re-treat the pistons every so often and/or having the stuff flake in my combustion chamber and possibly causing damage.

Would someone care to enlighten me?

Thanks!

Joe

My understanding is that 'flaking' was a problem with the early coating processes of yester-year. Current coating processes are supposed to create a permanent bond. My DD has ceramic per Arias recommendation.

I have ceramic, as does my buddy across the lake with the blue 'DA twin'. Until this year, Discovery used non-coated pistons in their extreme s/c projects, but now favors ceramic. Seems like a good idea for higher boost applications.

I would suggest checking out WPC treatment. It is permanent, and can be used on anything from pistons, bearings, gears, cylinders, cam lobes, piston rings etc.
It uses a very hard media at ~10-~20 microns at very high velocity to bombard the part. Everyone from F1 teams to Honda (for production cars) uses it.
