View Full Version : f/i 1972 2002 tii, thoughts, feelings
wallacefc 12-07-2006, 11:23 PM hey ive pretty much got everything figured out about what to do to my 2002 tii but i just wanted to know what you guys think. My plan was to take my tii and put a smaller turbo on it (from my saab 99turbo). My compression is a little higher than stock do to a reground head, but i was planning on using around 4-10 pounds of boost.
also i know the efi is probably the best choice but i was wondering how well the stock fuel system would work. thank
SOUTHBAYeric 12-08-2006, 03:02 AM Your stock fuel system won't work. That system is tuned for a bone stock tii and nothing more. There are ways to get it done but it is a black art and will end up costing more than building an efi setup.
MegaDeTH 12-08-2006, 09:43 AM those tii fi pumps really are a black art
you also have no spark control, if you boost you'll want that, there are some options for retarding under boost, but they too are a hack job
go to a modern FI/Spark if your gonna boost
2many02s 12-08-2006, 09:49 AM If you aren't staying stock with it, go modern. It will save you headaches down the road.
Alpine003 12-08-2006, 11:51 AM What I'm doing is taking out my entire Tii system and leaving it untouched so that I can put it back in later down the line to preserve the "Tii" heritage.
I'll be starting with a regular 2002 motor with lower compression, MSII efi, changing the fuel delivery, etc.
For some reason, I find hacking up a good running Tii setup sacriliege.

i agree, i dont want to tear apart the tii setup, thats why i was wondering about using the keugelficher. btw i kinda know what is involved with the efi setup but i would like to know more detailed information if anyone has any

Some of you need to educate yourself on this. Saying it wont work is plain ignorance. Come to the E21 section and look at the numbers these guys are putting down with CIS. Sure it takes a few tricks, nothing concidered black art, in fact, its documented and can be done. Obviously EFI would be the "best" route, but k-jet isnt a bad option.

someone needs an education
TII's use a Kugelfischer fuel injection setup, this is NOTHING like a k-jet
k-jet is a good option, I'm installing a 320i intake manifold on my 2002
cheechthechi 12-13-2006, 10:18 PM The kugelfischer system and K - Jetronic are totally different as stated above. The Former uses a pump to destribute fuel and is more mechanical in comparison to the latter which uses a fuel distributor triggered by a airflow meter to regulate and distribute fuel. Its best to go with efi and save those tii parts. Tii cars are kinda rare, imo I'd trubo one of the non tii cars as they aren't worth as much.

No need to educate myself, I know the difference's, and I agree with what is stated above. I replied hastily, and the consequences were severe. Minus rep for me...

Guys, hate to rain on the parade, but I have several Turbocharging articles from Roundel's back in the 70s. Actual owners with Tii's doing the write ups.
There were 2-3 bolt-on turbo units out there for Tii when the car was but a few years old. The essence of these articles is that it was a bolt on kit, ther was nothing changed on the stock engine except perhaps timing and air/fuel mixtures on the throttle body.
Now realize these were not given the technology known today about what many of you seem to know about your own projects, but to say it's black art and voodoo is wrong, it's been done... The output was probably not as dramatic as other roll-your-own possibilities now.
The companies making the stuff were the likes of Callaway and some other companies that are now big names in the business. Some of them sold the kits and disappeared. This was basically a kit to allow a USA Tii owner to make his own stealth Turbo, which is for all intents and purposes a Turbocharged Tii.
Because it was Tii related, I have plans to post the articles (with permission) from the Roundels for discussion sake over on the Tii Register web site (www.tiiregister.com) in the very near future.
My only recommendation is - hey - Tiis are becoming rarer each year. We believe only 20% or less of the original production are accounted for in the USA, and that doesn't mean 20% are still running or on the road.
Save the legends, there are plenty of 2002s ready to be turbocharged and they are glad to give up their Solex's for such a fine cause :)

Dude you lose no respect from me. Like I've always said, the e21 guys are probabally some of the most creative guys in the BMW world.

No dissing here either. I started to reply to your post and it stayed here in my browser a while to get some other data before I replied. You changed it before I saw it again!!!
