I have a fuse in the trunk under the mat on the battery side that I still can not figure out! Tried to follow it to no avail!

Anyone know?

Is this the one near the battery? 30A fuse? Any fuse, is designed to do two things: 1) Avoid short circuit which may cause fire, 2) Avoid overloading the system which can also? Yes, cause fire. I'd say that it's to avoid short circuiting the motors in the convertible. I'd imagine that the manual VERT does not have one, just my guess. You'd have to look at schematics to figure out where it lands.

BTW, it makes that the VERT has a quite a few fuses which I think they did it in case moisture or water gets into the convetible components which may cause a short.

Damn I forgot what it was for, but I'm pretty sure it's to protect the roof motors.

That is the fuse that supplies power to the top operating system. Ask me how I know.

My top quit working suddenly. I had it to several shops, and no one could determine the cause. Ultimately the top control module was changed, but it still didn't work. I had checked all the fuses visually numerous times. One day I was working on an electrical system in my garage and was using my multimeter. With it I checked the continuity of all the top fuses. Low and behold the one in the trunk was open. I replaced it, re-synced the top motors and all is working again.

 $$$$$

Didn't any BMW diagnostic tool see that the module was just fine?

Unfortunately, no. The indy shop could not get the module to respond with the diagnostic tool. That is why it was changed. Since they couldn't get the top working, they put the original module back in and gave me the car back - no charge. The mechanic said they had over 5 hours work in my car, diagnostic and parts replacement, but there was still no charge.

I think they were embarrased that they couldn't find the problem. After I replaced the fuse, I took the car back and talked to them. You should have seen their faces when I showed them what the problem actually was. They changed their procedures. Now they will not accept visually checked fuses as OK. Any suspect fuse MUST now be verified by a multimeter.

Why didn't they install it in the fuse box. It looks like a last minute Microsoft Security Patch. Just kind of weird. All fused should be in one place.

On my car the fuse box is in the front and all the top wires go to the rear. Having the fuse in the rear reduces the wire run.

I once had a 1977 Fiat that quit on me. I immediately suspected the fuel pump fuse because the pump buzz stopped shortly before it quit. It took hours to find the fuse under the carpet by the gas pedal.

that will teach you for buying a Fiat :)

Then don't take off your lower dash pannels.

IIRC, there's a couple more fuses there.
