Quick question, does my '94 530iA have a top speed governor and if so, at what speed... thanks! I don't have z-rated tires yet so I'm not going to test it, for now :stickoutt

yes, most are electronically limited at around 130mph. if you get the sports package, it shifts the limiter to 155mph :D this can be cleared if you change the ecu software. the conforti chip that i might pickup for my e34 will delete the electronic speed limiter. [and give an extra 22hp, 23#ft of torque and 7k rev limit]

i have come close to this with my '99 528iT. it has nitto ZRs on it, and the sports pack, so i figured why the heck not.

Cool, how much is the comforti chip... do they make it for the 530i?

I can never keep them straight, but there's Jim Conforti's chip (JC), Mark D'Sylva, and Dinan.

The first two are highly regarded for the sixes. Not sure about the 8-cylinder cars.

P.S.- Mine has a 128 MPH fuel-shutoff, as will yours. It's pretty violent and will immediately knock you down to about 123 or so. I've hit it a few times. :)

I hit it in my 528. It was 128mph.

An E34 model came with a sport package (besides the 540i Sport, that is)? I was not aware of this, what did it consist of?

Doesn't exist, unfortunately.

The JC chip (sometimes called the Turner Motorsport chip, even though they're identical) removes the top speed governor, but I've never read whether the D'Sylva (also known as the EAT Ultrachip) does it as well. I imagine it would. Both are available for your car, and will run you ~250 new, considerably less used (got mine for 70-something). Highly recommended mod, at least for the I6 engines. I imagine the gains on V8's aren't quite as good though still very much worth it.

Heh, I hit 140 in my 530i before I came off the gas... I did not know it was aound 123MPH. That is too slow.

Yeah, that'd what I thought.. the suspension's sprung stiffly enough (for stock) and LSD was available stand-alone but the sport seats would have been too good to pass up.

Doesn't exist, unfortunately.

I hit it at 210 Km/h (130 MPH) mine is a Canadian 530IA. What about disconnecting the speed sensor ?? I never tried, but a second car or pulse sensor will be needed to know how fast I go.

Not true, when I get home I'll post the top speeds of the V8's in the owner's manual. If I remember correctly, the top speed of a 530ia was 143 and the manual version was 145 or 148 (gov. limited). I've also had mine up to 135 and it was still pulling, so it's def. not 128mph.

This has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. There are great innacuracies in speedometers above 100mph, so much so in fact, that you can be going an indicated 140 mph, but actually only be going around 125 mph or so. The limit for all e34 cars, with exception of 540i sport, and the m5 is 128 mph. The m5 and 540 sport are 155mph. The most accurate way of determining your speed is to constantly reset the avg mph setting on the obc, but this would be dangerous at the speeds we are talking about.

Edit: I forgot to mention that my car is not chipped, and I've seen an indicated speed of over 130mph as well, and while it was still pulling, the governor was most likely about to cut in.

My E34 540i/6 hit 128mph on the dyno and the limiter kicked in. So it looks like they all had it.

yeah, i think now, at least when ive been checking the bmwusa site, speed is capped at 130 for all non ///M cars [im pretty sure], BUT if you add the sports package [always fun] it caps it a 155. so its a standard that has been maintained

i've hit speedo indicated 130+ with room to go. i remember the first time hitting a governor was in a 96 honda civic when you hit 120 bam it knocked you down to like 100. scary feeling cause i was going down a hill with it floored.

It could be done by a passenger... :)

I have an EAT chip, but I run out of gears at 120MPH now, so I don't know if the limiter is still there or not :(

The 4.10s make the ride up to 120 pretty fun, though. :)

Yes Mark D chips do de-limit your car etc...

Here is an example for a 535i:

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=750 bgColor=#402950 border=0><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 30pt; mso-yfti-irow: 4"><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 3.75pt; PADDING-LEFT: 3.75pt; BACKGROUND: #301940; PADDING-BOTTOM: 3.75pt; PADDING-TOP: 3.75pt; HEIGHT: 30pt">E34 535i, 3.5l late M30<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:P></O:P>

</TD><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 3.75pt; PADDING-LEFT: 3.75pt; BACKGROUND: #301940; PADDING-BOTTOM: 3.75pt; PADDING-TOP: 3.75pt; HEIGHT: 30pt">6800 rev. limit<O:P></O:P>

</TD><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 3.75pt; PADDING-LEFT: 3.75pt; BACKGROUND: #301940; PADDING-BOTTOM: 3.75pt; PADDING-TOP: 3.75pt; HEIGHT: 30pt">0 261 200 179<O:P></O:P>

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
And for a M60:
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=750 bgColor=#402950 border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#301940><TD>94/95 M60 4.0l without EWS-II, AUTO transmission</TD><TD>stock rev. limit, no speed limiter</TD><TD>0 261 200 404</TD><TD>sw version 1.267.358.720</TD><TD>$229</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=750 bgColor=#402950 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>95 M60 4.0l without EWS-II, MANUAL transmission</TD><TD>rev limit increased, no speed limiter</TD><TD>0 261 200 404</TD><TD>sw version 1.267.358.720</TD><TD>$229</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

You will not be getting those kind of number increases. Conforti does make a chip for the 530i but there are other chips as well that have a "different" reputation.

The EAT chip is not available to the 530ia yet. if im lucky i will be the new tester:D

I definantly hit 138 on the onramp so i agree with the others... who needs to go 145mph anyways:confused

I believe that all of Mark's chip's take away the limiter, at least that's what I remember. Not sure why it doesn't say that it does on the 535i but a quick email to him would solve that, also I'm sure that if you said you wanted it gone he could easily remove that for you.

I think one good way to find your true speed is to use a GPS device. The one I have shows you your current speed independent of your speedo...

Can't argue with a satellite.

You can calculate your actual speed by figuring out what the rolling radius is for your tire (its listed on various websites), then take your gear ratios and engine speed to determine the number of rotations the tires is doing. Then its just basic conversion to figure out your miles per hour. If you do it in Excel you can create graphs to see how fast you can go in each gear and what the theoritical top speed is. Its also a helpful tool to figure out what gearing and tire sizes to go with.
I have a spereadshett that I can email anyone who is interested.
I haven't tried for a top speed with my turbo engine, but I can tell you that all the chips I've tried before remove the top speed governor because I've been able to hit 150mph a number of time. I have to say that the 5 is the most rock solid of any car that I have ever driven over 130mph. Except in the rain. My Audi feels much better at 125 in the rain.*

I have a picture of mine at almost 260km/hour which is 160miles/hour
Are you saying it was just at 128miles/hour?
EDIT
The pic was taken on an autobahn in germany last year when the car was imported to Iceland ( A friend of mine imported it)
