View Full Version : Need 2002 Advise!
jhall1957 12-06-2006, 11:25 AM A friend (our I) am looking at a seemlingly nice 1974 2002 TI (no second I here) that this fellow wants to sell for $3,500.
We are going to have it looked at by the local BMW man, but I wanted some extra input.
First, it is a true euro TI. Kilometers on speedo and everything in german.
The car looks good, started cold pretty well. Drivers side rocker panel is rusted thru and looks pretty bad. Rust around rear window, and some spots above rear wheel wells. The interior is ok, seats are not bad at all!
So, anything else I should cover? Any other thoughts?
MegaDeTH 12-06-2006, 11:53 AM bad spots for rust!
Alpine003 12-06-2006, 01:31 PM Check for rear subframe rust, floor rust, spare tire rust, and take a peak at the fuel pump from underneath.
But based on the initial description, it seems like more trouble than it's worth imo.
$3500 is pretty steep for the kind of condition you describe it in.

IIRC, Ti and Tii models did not overlap. One can convert to Ti spec, but you mentioned this is a "true euro Ti". Ti production was from 9/78 through 4/71, then Tii prod began. I apologize for the vagueness, but I'm almost certain no "true" Ti was built in '74.
MegaDeTH 12-06-2006, 01:59 PM most important spots to check are the shock towers, they are probably rusty based on the description
I can see though my spare tire well, but it's a simple fix compared to shock towers and frame rails
2many02s 12-06-2006, 02:27 PM That kinda rust, I'd walk away. You can find better 02s around your area in that price range.

I'm by no means an expert on 2002 history, but I happened to have the 2006 www.bmw2002.co.uk calendar on the wall beside me. Miss December is labeled "Yaniv's 2002Ti from Israel - the last ti" it's a red car, that has a late model black plastic grille, which I understand started in the late '73 production for Europe. So, maybe there is a chance it's real.
This doesn't change the fact that the subject car has a lot of work ahead of it. Send an email to that BMW Mobile Tradition contact (I forget) that can run the VIN and build date. Maybe a true ti is worth the work and $$.

tommozza 12-06-2006, 06:16 PM Maybe hes converted to black grilles. Has early style hubcaps...
MattE21 12-06-2006, 07:03 PM i would not pay that price for an 02 with any amount of rust.
Dickfruster 12-06-2006, 08:20 PM 68-72 rust free o2 is around $3500 and up. You take that price and deduct $2000 for the rockers and some other rust you find. And we get $1500, a fair value with the rest of the car being OK.
condorw 12-06-2006, 09:18 PM all depends on what you want to do with it and how high is your budget.
$3500 is pretty high. i found my last 02 in CA (could look in AZ too), had it transported to MD and had only a small amount of work to do.
was less than $3500 for the car and transport.
dieterschmied 12-16-2006, 12:53 AM Pass on it. That's too much. I have one without rust for that much in Cincinnati but it is automatic.
