Looking to find a decent AC repair shop on island as mine just blows hot air in your face. Considering gonig to BME, but wanted to see if there were any exclusively AC "experts" that come recommended from you guys. Oh and what does BME run per hour on labor? (I assume ~$85...)

I think BME is in the $90s. I go to Motorwerkes and they did the ac on my 750il, E30 325i and E34 Touring. I still have the Touring and it was done @ 2 years ago and it still blows cold.

For a strictly AC place, I went to Norther AC, but that was years ago ans I can't remember which car they worked on.

If your compressor is still working, it would just be a changeover to R134. I think they also change the receiver dryer at the same time and possibly the expansion valve. IIRC, if it is just that, my 325i ran @ $450. That was maybe 5 years ago or so.

IIRC, the last time I was at BME the hourly rate was $79...

I figured that I'd need a TXV and R-134a conversion. The part that worries me is if the evaporator is shot...then we're talking major $$$ as they have to disassemble the damn dash to get at it in an E28. $450 is much more palatable. We'll see, first order of business is tire install. Still driving the Audi until then...

At BME they recharged my moms 535i with R-12, even though it was converted a year ago.......:mad I had to evacuate and recharge the whole system and put new oil in after that.:mad

That's not too encouraging. I have heard that R-134a is not as effective a car refrigerant than the R-12 units, esp after a conversion. My experience with refrigeration plants in a naval application would indicate the same...

yes it is true R-12 is a better refrigerant, but R-134 is more "safe" for the enviroment

I'm sure I'll see you around, seems I've passed everyone on the board once already and I've been on-island less than a month. Better than Guam though, where I got spotted everywhere in my Mugellorot E36 M3, bad news.

On Oahu, I would recommend going with BMW specialists (such as Motowerks or BME), and avoid the AC Specialist shops - more so for a car like yours. The only thing about BME is, you WILL get an accurate diagnosis, but if it's an evaporator job, the tech who is the most qualified to do the job hasn't worked there in months. Beastmaster or I can put you in touch with the right "dash has to come out" guy, if you'd like. Plus, BM would probably agree, that, although there's little question that Motorwerks can do the job correctly, I'm not sure that's the environment where you would have your TAN interior taken apart. And yes, BME is @ $89/hour, but that's likely to change as of January.

E28, I think I know you. I cant remember your name, but you gave me a ride in your M3 after you had the Turner cams installed (this was at sub school). I later bought Gus's Avus blue M3, which my ex totalled for me. Now I have the M5. Have you seen Kieran and Rick??

Yup, Motorwerkes can do the job, but their lot can get a little crowded for most enthusiasts liking. If you saw the place, you'd know why.

Rev:
You must know me. Small world. Yeah, I heard Gus sold his Avus M3 and bought a Lancer Evo?? I did run into Kieran while I was in Bremerton (my boat did a change of homeport from Guam after the grounding), haven't seen Rick Gallagher in a long time but I have heard some things about him (PM if you want some details, all hearsay). Oh, this is Josh BTW. And I sold the red M3 to my dad, but you are correct that I had the cams etc. installed at Turner. Good memory. BTW, you aren't at SDV Team 2 are you?

Rick is is SWO quals I think, but I will pm for the good stuff :) I did hear he got married. Anyway where did you find your M5, Guam? BTW this is Brian.
