can't you present the key to the dealership along with registration and they will cut it according to the VIN and program the chip as long as the key is pretty much legitimate

you can buy them anywhere and get them cut at the dealership

Any BMW 1/95 and newer has to be ordered via a dealer which places an order with BMW NA. They have the EWS chip in them and only NA can program them. You might be able to get them cut elsewhere but not coded... Most dealers don't even have any key machines because the newer keys are laser cut and the machines are very costly.

pretty sure the keys are sent in from germany. i wouldnt think tha dealers have the patterns in their databases nor the proper equipment to fabricate them.

Key orders placed in North America are made in North America by BMW NA in Mt. Olive, NJ.
