View Full Version : A few Bimmer shots from Redline Time Attack
SinCityE46M3 12-04-2006, 08:25 PM Went to the Redline Time Attack at Buttonwillow this past weekend and competed in all 3 RWD classes in my 350Z. Didn't do to well lol. Ruined a brand new body kit, and wasn't too happy with my times. Anyways, here are the pics of the only two Bimmers that was there. Some good shots...

PbFut 12-05-2006, 12:31 AM Your 2.02 is a respectable time for cw13. I had a qualified spot for the event up until the last run on Sunday at a NASA Miller Motor Sports Park event last spring. A ringer e36 showed up and kicked my but. I guess he didn’t bother with the redline event. My M-coupe has little more than suspension and tires and has only found an 02 as well at BW CW13. I would not have been competitive, but it would have been fun to attend. Looks like Robi was well represented. His cars are always right on the edge and very fast. Not so reliable though. Anyway, looks like you had fun.
BTW, there is a 350z owner from Las Vegas who runs NASA TT most events. He and I are fairly close and enjoy mixing it up once a month. Maybe you would like to join us some time.

Thanks. 2:02 is a generally fast time I know, but its frustrating because my car should be a 1:55 1:56 car easy. Something is wrong suspension wise and I can't figure it out. There was a yellow 350Z from the same shop that was there with me running 2:02s with Nitto R-Comps and full stock interior while my car is running those times on Hoosiers and 80% gutted interior. Other than that our cars are nearly identical. My car just isn't sticking to the ground like it should. It upsets too easily with the slightest of bumps whereas the yellow Z didn't even notice them. Its being taken apart right now in hopes of finding something bent or broken that changes the suspension geometry lol.
The guy that runs the NASA TT, is his name Patrick? Burgundy 350Z with wheels and a wing? If it is, he is a great guy and I am happy he is still racing his Z. I met him when I first started racing and haven't really seen him since.
EDIT: I looked into the NASA TT thing and according to their little calculator I would be in TTU. What is that class like?
SinCityE46M3 12-05-2006, 01:32 AM Results are up on RedlineTimeAttack.com. Congrats to Matt Kogan who piloted that gray '92 325i pictured above to a 3rd place finish in the Street RWD class with a 2:05.280!!!
tylerAWe36m3 12-05-2006, 04:41 AM sick pics. PbFut- what configeration did you race at miller motorsports park? what was the best time you had?
325racer 12-05-2006, 01:26 PM Thanks for the kudos! I drove my butt off to run that time. I'm making about 225rwhp, but still on stock 325 brakes and I could tell that the brakes were the week point, so much so that I cracked a Rotor during my last Time Attack session. I plan to improve that before the next one of these I do.
Check out the other thread in the Cali section, there are some even better photo's over there, with some pretty sweet 2 wheel action!

SinCityE46M3 12-05-2006, 01:41 PM ^^^I thought Modified Magazine covers all of the Redline Time Attacks? Did you check Modified.com after the event?
PbFut 12-05-2006, 01:42 PM Tyler, we got to run the full course at Miller. I believe it was the first event using the entire 4.x miles. My car was overheating badly. Combination of altitude and too much octane. The OEM computer was leaning out the mix and heating things up.
I found it difficult to learn the track for TT style racing. Very fast corners and I wanted to over drive a couple corners that had complex multiple apex to them. I can’t recall the times and My Laps does not have the event on my history. For those who have not experienced MMSP, I highly recommend the trek to Utah. The track is really a lot of fun. Just be prepared for the anomalies of running at 4000 ft., very fast corners and gobs of grip.
Sin,
The drivers name is Jay Hale. Black 350z.
TTU, you do have a modded Z. I am still putting around in B. Class goes (R)ace, (U)nlimited, A, B, C, down to G. The idea is to try and fit any car and any mod into a class structure so you can run what you brung.
Started 3 years ago, the original concept of NASA TT was to give the advanced HPDE street cars a little taste of competition to seed other race groups. What ended up happening is the group is now very large. We all enjoy being part of the group so much, no one moves on. A few have but often come back and join us for a session or two. It is also very inexpensive to run. Literally not costing any more than what one would spend on HPDE. Though passing is unlimited with respect, there is no wheel 2 wheel. This softens the safety requirements allowing cars to run without cages. I’m sure there are many opinions on this matter. The speeds of the event have increased dramatically this past year and NASA is understandably nervous about the issue. More and more cars now have cages as we as a group mature. Problem is, the whole basis of the series was to be a “bring your street car to the track” sort of deal. Not sure where all that came from, sorry OT.
Anyway, if you would like to visit, drop me an email.

I think this was the west coast final. Not sure.
There were a couple select NASA TT events that qualified you to attend this one. The redline events also qualified the top times for invites to this west coast final and a east coast final for the other side of the country.

The name Jay Hale sounds familiar but I don't think I have ever met him. Yes I do have a highly modded Z. I have actually posted a picture of me driving it above, its the really dirty one held together with duct tape lol. I will make it a point to try at least one N.A.S.A. TT event in 07.

That race you speak of was the Super Street Magazine Time Attack held last month at Buttonwillow. The Redline evnets are open to anybody without qualifying, but that might change for next year after a lot of complaints about a first time driver in the Street RWD class lol. He was the reason my bumper needed so much duct tape and two of the cars had to be re-run because of him. :rolleyes

Yeah, thats it. But the kind photographer decided that he only had 400+ pictures to take, and I wasn't worthy of any of them. :(
Maybe I didn't drive fast enough. Next year!
SinCityE46M3 12-05-2006, 01:58 PM ^^^Hahaha, that sucks. They usually only shoot a few sessions, not necessarily the whole day. Did you miss any of your practice sessions?

I had to pass him and 2 other people during my first Time Attack session and I didn't get a Re-Run!!!!!!!!!! Guess I didn't bitch loud enough! Not sure if it would have helped however, but who knows. Oh well, third is good, considering that first was a PRO driver.

Your time was respectable, no doubt. We and another 350Z got a re-run because of the circumstances he created. He went off after Lost Hill and stayed in the gas doing doughnuts and kicking rocks the size of your fist onto the track. My car was right behind him when he did this and one of those rocks desroyed my front bumper and then the dirt he spit on the track caused my car to put 4 wheels of itself. The guy behind me came over Lost Hill and the dust was so bad he couldn't even see the track and he went off as well.

I did miss a practice session. So I guess no one to blame. :embarrasm

I was surprised that you didn't have to show any proof of experience on track. Although, I like the idea of the driver being responsible for him/herself, I don't think its a good idea to have experienced drivers and inexperienced drivers (w/o instructor) in such close proximity on track.
At Summit Point, they put you in grid based on your fastest practice lap. That way, for the time attack, no one would run up on a slower car, and it worked very well.
I look forward to doing this again next year.

They did group by lap time, but that guy was so far off that it didn't matter who they grouped him with. The guys that ran the event asked me, and a few others I'm sure, to work closely with them for the next month or so to help and re-structure the event entirely from rules of entry, to car classing, to organization. Hopefully 2007 will be a lot more "professional"
Draven 12-05-2006, 05:23 PM This is Kevin from Redline. For those of u there u will remember as the guy doing grip wearing sun glasses, goatee, black redline hat, redline staff shirt, and was kinda fat.. LOL.. We are sorry for the j*ck*ss in that Lexus who caused those problems. It's so hard to rid o the event of those guys and will do like honest people, as to which he said he had 3 HPDEs. If u do remember u were in front of the Lexus during the first Time attack runs, but were late getting bucked in hot pits so we had to jump him in front. Sorry again for yelling so much at you, but once they hit track we try to keep everyone on the same lap. it goes off the first car. We are reworking a lot of things which will included more instructors or having if we are short possible asking advanced driver's to please ride along with the novices to atleast give them the basics... It will be different in 07 for the novice drivers.. Also check rules changes as well. I'm glad people did have a good time. I really enjoyed the event and u'll see me at every event next year. If u have any questions please feel free to contact me as well.

Hey Kevin! Were you the one I talked to while I was in my car waiting to go out? I had you give your card to my co-driver, and forgot to get it from him after that. If so, please give me your email address so we can discuss some things about next year. Hey, you wouldn't happen to have all of the times from the Time Attack runs would you? I keep checking the site every few minutes, but they still aren't up for those who didn't place 1-3. :) Thanks.
Draven 12-05-2006, 06:29 PM No that wasnt me.. I dont have business cards yet or the lap times. I'm one of the 3 East Coast guys and I left last night. I'll pm you my e-mail so we can discuss some of the up coming changes. thanks again..
Kevin - I'm in for more stuff next year. I had a great time at Summit this year. Dan's got my number if you guys need me for anything.

Ryan-N-Austin 12-05-2006, 07:34 PM How many corvettes usually show up to events like these? Perhaps we'll make the trek from Texas for an event next year, since we have no time attack offerings around here..

Not many Corvettes unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how fast your car is :). I don't think there were any that competed in the Time Attack last weekend and only one on the practice/HPDE day on Saturday.

I have a hard time believing a C5 vette wouldnt be a very dominate force at such an event... Maybe we can make it out there some time.

I would say that the C5 Z06 that was out there Saturday could have probably placed 2nd overall. Very fast and a great driver. Highly modded Vette though.

Try to get u a jump start on the events for next year. Everyone please keep in touch with Redline's website for the updated rules and car classing changes for 07..
325racer 12-06-2006, 12:28 PM Any place other than the Redline forum where these "Rule Changes" are being discussed?
Depending on what kind of people you want to attend, I'd almost put in another even more Basic Street class that does not allow forced induction. As that is not a "Simple" bolt on and makes a huge improvement on many cars. I know for a fact that if I put a supercharger or turbo on my car, I could have easily run 3 seconds faster per lap, if not more, well that and deffinitly some better brakes to go with the power of course.

Agreed. I have no plans on forced induction on the M3, I'd like to see an NA Street class too.
