DLS and I made sweet love behind garage #2.. only a few people saw us..

BJ Farmer, Jacey? (BlackE46 M3 on SSR/Hoosier), and I all had a great time with me driving the 240..

There were no incidents except a 944 hitting the T13 corner working station.. :nono :nono

I didnt get the white 240sx into the 55's like I thought it should, but we had a small power problem, and I turned 56's..

I should have some good videos up today, including a 1:52 lap in a corvette..

Who's ready for TDE Dec 9/10??

So are you now the reigning HPDE champion in your region? :devillook
Don't come out here, I will have to show you my superior skillz by punting you off the track going into turn 7 at Infineon. Only NASA allows this trick move, I have seen in twice personally and it does work. The punted driver will not be HPDE champion that day. :help

Yes, Ryan doesn't want anyone to know it....but he is really a nice guy.

Sucks that I was sick as a dawg, and lost 90% of my voice all weekend (the latter may arguably be a good thing...). :( I barely broke into the 58's in my car, despite the cold temperatures. :( :( :(

I'll admit, I may have over estimated the 240's ability.. but there is more left on the table for sure.. We had boost control problems preventing me from going full throttle in 4th and 5th gear, so we were obviously down on power.. That, and the cold weather just didnt help the RA-1's and Hawk blues..

We'll be back this weekend going the other direction, with the boost problems fixed..

Weird. Because I rode with this person I am talking about in his friends 240 from out of town and it had the SAME issue in 4th and 5th. Couldn't go full throttle because it would start bucking like mad.

Weird. Small World. Two different people in two states with the same car with the same problem on the track. That car was scary. Brakes sucked, no traction on crappy tires... I think we were mostly just drifting.

Ryan, it was great playing tag in the 240 - but I just couldn't keep up with you in the Vette. Remove about 100hp and put on 275s, maybe I'll at least be able stay close with traffic.

Saw you guys changing a tire on the way out of CS, you get back on the road OK. (I would have stopped, but I thought we were racing back to Austin).

No, when ever the Red Vette with black wheels, or the 240sx was out in the white group, that was me driving, other wise.. if they were out in the yellow group, it was the car owners driving them..

Well yall were both driving good coming into 10. One of the few cars that would go balls to the wall over the hump and then late brake the hell out of it. Id say yall were gaining 50 feet on all the cars in front of yall every time on that corner, because everyone else couldnt figure out what to do with that hump and braking.

Boost problems should be fixed this weekend...maybe a splash of race gas, and about 22 psi, Close to 375rwhp should help me keep up with you :)

Although, Im not sure more power will really help my differential situation :lol

The one exception to this may be the E36 M3. Its somewhat primitive ABS system gets all out of whack if you brake just after the hump, with the rear end unweighted. It works best doing a little bit of braking just as you go over the hump, release some brake pressure just after its crest, then complete braking & downshift as the back end settles after the hump, with some trail braking into the corner.

It is the only ABS-equipped car that I have found that needs to be driven this way here. All others are happy to brake after the crest of the hump.

IIRC, Bill's car's ABS behaves slightly differently than mine. I have not driven his car at TWS, but at MSR Cresson, it felt as if his ABS was not nearly as eager to come on as mine is. I could be recalling incorrectly, however.

Yeah, that's 100 more WHP than the pig has, that should work.
Still going to clobber you on 15, unless you cut a hole in the floor and help out with your feet.

I have to brake twice going into 10, once right before the hill, and once right after when the wheels load again. I am going way to fast ~105 to stop after that hill. I don't have any ABS issues, but I've tried only once to get it all in after the Hill, and there is just not enough room, even if I trail brake into 10. I do have ABS issues braking in 1 on the low line. There are some bumps on my brake line that send my chassis into resonation, which freaks out the ABS. OJ tells me there is a line slightly to the right that does not have the bumps, I need to find it.

For the record, I have turned 1:57.8 in my ITS car at a BMWCCA race at TWS in 2.9 CCW last november. That would be a new SCCA ITS record, but the SCCA doesn't run regional races in that configuration any more. I do hold the TWS CW 1.8 record for SCCA ITS though from my first SCCA race. If the SCCA didn't screw us, I would probably hold all the track records for ITS in Texas as I would have done the full season in SCCA this year, not that it matters anyhow... Not bragging, I have been to most of the tracks and I know what I can turn.

The best time in that car before the stickley motor and gears was 1:57.5. I would expect low 1:56 or high 1:55's on fresh tires in the current car configuration at TWS 2.9 CCW. The car weighs 2850# and has 180RWH on 7" wide rims.

As for braking late into 10, I think it depends on the car. I can do it in my car, but I don't do it as it is faster for me to brake a little earlier, turn in early and drive a shallower line and get on the gas sooner and cut off lots of distance. In my old M3 track car, I was braking after the hump without issues.

We need to design a HPDE champion trophy. :D

The gayman won't be coming out this weekend - I'm bringing the race car out for the new owner. Yes, the ITS car has been sold and the new owner is running his first event in it.

I've got track wheels and Hoosiers for the Cayman at the shop - we'll see next time. :D

I don't know how to drive fast cars.... I'm probably not driving at all this weekend so I'll go for a ride with you and see if I can help. I think there are three sections going CW that is the key to going fast. They will cone off the fastest line into 15, but coming out of 15 is very important as well as putting on the big steel nuts and going into 2 full tilt. Also, the fastest line through 5 & 6 for CCW will be apparent when you do it CW.

You will probably have to brake on the banking in the Z06, but in the 325, slight lift, then turning in and getting back on full throttle off the banking with the car moving a bit sideways is really fast. However, it is easy to miss the braking zone that way. I did a pass at that one SCCA by doing this.

He's just a bit late on the apex in 5. W/ a bizziolion rwhp, that's a smart move. Kenzo never uses his brakes, so his line is different.

It was not the instructors group. I believe it was like yellow. They were only allowed to pass on certain straights. So yes, it was illegal, and they were blackflagged for it, mind you, before they got to the blackflag station the elise spun off in 6, so they were black flagged for that too.

You should know that wasnt instructors. Since when do instructors drive nobles. Instructors have beater miatas and the like.

Those 2 vehicles WERE in the instructor group. The yellow Lotus belongs to an instructor with whom I am good friends. The Noble is a new instructor. While it is possible they were running in a different group, as you say, they ARE instructors. And so I guess they should have known better!

Yep, Dave's right...both cars belong to instructors. There was a yellow Elise running in the Yellow run group though, but the instructor Elise was the only one out there with black Volk wheels. I didn't see Melvin there either and to tell you the truth, I've never seen Melvin instruct at a TDE event. Melvin was my instructor the first time I was ever on a track at MSRC in my 410 rwhp '99 Corvette FRC. I believe I tore the front splitter on the first day exiting Rattlesnake. lol Fun times...he was running a Z06 then.

Not really ironic. When you get the typical green student on track, they are lightyears away from the kind of skill/knowlege needed to turn a fast lap. And you wouldn't want them trying it anyway in most of the cars they have.

DE insructors don't need to be hot shoes, just good at communicating and keeping their students from killing themselves or each other. If you *really* want to get racing instruction, someplace like Skip Barber is probably a better bet, because you won't get it in a green or blue DE session.

There are fast instructors, and many are talented racers, but being a racer doesn't make one a good instructor. Likewise, being an instructor doesn't mean they're fast.

Heh heh - that was me in the Elise. :) I think the Noble was confused since we usually run in the instructor group with passing everywhere. That session was combined instructor/advanced, with restricted passing. He slowed was down to let me pass, and I didn't want to stop to stay behind him. So I did what I had to do!

Because I wasn't as fast when I did CW(a few months back) compared to when I did CCW last time. I was thinking CW would be faster but I thought I remembered an instructor at a TWS DE 2 months or so back saying CCW was faster.

PS-When I say faster I really mean quicker lap times...

Oh, and ask Ryan who almost lapped him last week. :alright

Yup, you caught me.

Good going!!

Greg, I think in most cars, CW is only slightly faster in lap times. Exceptions may be extremely high HP cars such as Z06's and the rare well-driven Viper, because CW allows so much more time at WOT and these cars can continue accelerating when your car & mine have hit terminal velocity.

FYI...last Saturday, I took the 550 out there for the day on essentialy bald rear tires (replaced the tires today). Even with all the oversteer & zero grip I had in 48 degre temperatures, I still saw an indicated 150 MPH every single lap before braking for T15. The C5 Ryan was driving, oversteer and all, showed 160 when I looked. Your car & mine would maybe hit 140.

PMiranda
12-14-2006, 12:12 PM
Even in a momentum car, I think CW is faster since you spend way more time WOT. In my SRF I'm WOT from turn-in of 3 to turn-in off the banking. Or at least I am in my mind. It's been a couple years since I've run that configuration :(
