View Full Version : Painting CF hood - which shop in San Diego?

I'm getting tired of the black CF hood thing, so I'm looking to get it painted. However, several of the shops I went to won't touch CF (Phil Thearle and Poway Valley Collison). West Coast will do it, but says results can be sub optimal on CF.

I looked through several bf.c posts and some of the painted CF hoods really came out nice.

Anyone in the San Diego/Orange county area know first hand of a shop that knows how to paint a CF hood?

I'm not sure of it personally, but at the fusion meets there is an Audi guy with a painted CF hood, its faded, from solid on the outsides to transparent in the center, it looks great. If you really are interested I'd go to 1 of the meets and ask him about it.

I just had a bumper painted at Chapparone on Balboa Ave. You might try calling them up.

Or you can try to find Bugzy with the silver Audi wagon at the Fusion meets, although there is a rumor that he got rid of that car, but he'll still know where to get it painted.

I had mine done by TAG Collision Center in San Marcos. On a 10-scale, it's about a 7, as far as quality goes. Not their fault, it was a mid-grade CF/FG hood with a number of imperfections to start with, and I wanted it done quickly to be ready for Bimmerfest, so the prep-time they had was minimal.

They quoted me $450, charged me $350. I'm happy with it, paint is holding up well, even after a brutal cross-country trip, and many thousands of miles of street driving.

I do a TON of CF motorcycle parts at my shop and the prep BY far is the most time consuming. Depending on the quailty of the CF part and how it was finished there are almost ALWAYS pin holes that I end up filling and refilling to get that nice wet look in the end!

m54sam,

Can you elaborate on the prepping process for painting CF. If the hood is already clear coated and is in near new condition, what do you need to do to it? I figure there is a ton of sanding, but how about filler, bondo?, etc. I don't know how to paint and don't pretend to know, but I wouldn't mind learning a thing or two. Plus, when I check out some of these shops, I can see is they know what they are talking about.

Well, I visited a number of shops that would do it, and in the end, I was told time and time again that painted CF will never look as good as an OEM metal hood in terms of fit and finish. To smooth out the CF hood, they would have to add filler which would add weight and a lot of labor sanding it smooth and even then it may not fit right and still be a wavy. I'm willing to give up a few pounds to get the look I want.

After almost giving up hope of painting my CF hood and thinking I had to go back to a stock metal hood, I had the great fortune of meeting and getting to know Jon Sibal from a Cars and Coffee meet a few weeks back. We talked about the usual stuff, and I mentioned painting my hood. Well, Jon, being the resourceful car modifier/artist gave the name of a shop that supposedly does the body work for Hamman USA.

I took off my CF hood, removed my gas door, dropped them off, and a week and a half later I had it back. Paint matches perfectly.
