View Full Version : I Sense Fraud Here- 1998 750il
Cody Thomson 12-02-2006, 06:04 PM This person claims it has the light armored package- but it sure doesn't look like it. Rear seats don't have the telephone and control station and the driver side shows buttons for all four windows (protection models only have the two front windows). Plus, didn't the 7 Series Protection debut in 1999? The previous owners may be correct, but the description is not.

It's a 5/98 production, so it is a 1999 model -- a 1999 BMW 750iAL. The A is for Awesome!

DaveClement 12-02-2006, 07:49 PM It is a 1998 model acording to the VIN, and definitely not a protection model. A true protection model will come up with "protection" in the model description in a Carfax search.

The 98 and older headlights, tail lights and door sills clearly are not the 99 and later style.
Like all E38 750s it has double pane windows, which may or may not be the "break resistant" kind. Mistaking the double pane windows for the protection package is a common mistake. There are many threads on this subject.
Qsilver7 12-02-2006, 08:00 PM I know that the 99 model year had a freakish short production run...but the VIN number on this car officially indicates that it is a 1998 model year.
DOT regulations requires that the 10th digit of the VIN indicate the model year. If you look at any car (like on ebay) you will see that the 10th digit of every 1998 has a W....the 1999 model year has an X as the 10th digit. :)

10th digit VIN breakdown for the E38:
S - 1995
T - 1996
V - 1997
W - 1998
X -1999
Y - 2000
1 - 2001
(as I was previewing my post...I see that Dave Clement has already metioned a viable discredit of the car being a 1999 model year and why it may be mistakenly thought of as a protection model) :worship:
DaveClement 12-02-2006, 08:26 PM Here is a Carfax link for a VIN from a true protection model that was on eBay a while back. I saved it because true protection models are so rare.

daisydawg 12-02-2006, 10:31 PM If it has a moonroof its not protection, according to my manual.

a protection vehicle would say "750iALP"
greene08 12-03-2006, 04:45 AM He probably just thought the double pane glass meant it had the protection package. Sucks for anyone who buys it thinking that is what they get. Although, might as well let them believe it... hardly anyone would ever use the features. If they had too... that sucks.
shogun 12-03-2006, 05:29 AM I Sense Fraud Here
No fraud, I believe. Everybody with a bit sense about prices for armored cars will not believe that for 25K one can get an armored car.
I just has double pane glass and that is all.
These guys up the road from me do know what they have.

Wow I have to go test drive this Monday.......
Thanks for the link.....
under 50k miles, Bulletproof what more does a guy need? Well maybe an oil slick or ejector seat......:)
greene08 12-03-2006, 12:48 PM $22k for that too? Dang that is a bargain! It's cheap to be a drug lord these days. :-) Too bad the color scheme reminds me of my 1993 Explorer or else I would trade mine in for that.

Sadly, the Protection was not an option when Tupac Shakur was shot to death in his '95 750il.
mindcrime88 12-03-2006, 07:26 PM ^ Oh well, too bad for him.
Anyway, the 740s arent exactly Ferraris and with that much added weight they must be really slow. I'd hate to be driving too fast around a corner thinking as though the car was normal. (BTW I should be biased, I love the e38)

Wow! That is reasonably priced in my opinion- a true Protection Model too. I'd probably snatch that car up if I didn't have two 7's already. I believe driving an armored car, no....an armored sports car would be such an exquisite luxury just because it is so rare.
I think the original ebay listing is a fraud because they go out of their way to add that light armored bit and then raise the price way more than it should be. I am sure if someone bought it they could get the car, but not a protection package that didn't exist for that year.
series 12-04-2006, 01:31 AM thats a rip off 28k and they said it was 150k new lol try like almost 95k
