Hello All,
Im looking at a 98 740i with 87k on the clock, for $8k. The PO has books records and car is very straight, what are the downfalls to that year? Any thioughts/opinions appreciated.
Thx,
Dan
Wow ... that is a fantastic price, even if it had high milage that would be a good price.
The 1998 740i was BMW's best year for the 7-series in the history of the 7-series.
If you're new to BMW, then there are things that are going to come up regardless of year or model. Things such as pixels missing in the instrument display, CD skipping, cracked molding above the windshield, etc. BMW will help replace the pixels, and the molding above the windshield costs $26 to replace.
And with any car that is closing in on 100k or 10 years, there will be repairs that are beyond normal tune-ups. So in the next year you'll probably have to get the manifold gaskets replaced, a new MAF, new oxygen sensors, new brakes, etc. BMW parts aren't expensive, so these aren't major issues either.
Ultimately, I think you will be very pleased with the purchase.
Do you have any pictures?

Damn thats Cheap. Get it looked at before you buy it. It's worth it to have the computer scanned. For sure. I have a 98 740i and I love it.
Check the front cupholder, And the headrests for functionality.

1997 BMW 750iL -- Driven by secret agent James Bond who eventually destroyed it by driving it off the top of a tall building and into an Avis Rental storefront window.
1999 BMW 750iL -- Driven by professional transporter Frank, it too was eventually destroyed by explosion (not Frank's fault).
1998 BMW 740i -- Has a perfect record for not being destroyed in a movie by anyone.

Umm, there's a parked thread in this 7er forum that goes into all sorts of "What to look for before buying an E38". I would highly advise checking it out.
