View Full Version : Blowout on the H1...SWEET!
E28M5 SubDriver 12-01-2006, 07:45 PM Yep, well my very worn tires gave up the ghost on the H1 coming into town this morning from Pearl City - left rear tire blew out completely at the interchange before the Likelike offramp (I will post a photo later). Luckily was going slow enough that I could coast off and make it to a parking lot without damaging my rims...Had to have it towed since the previous owner left the OE spare and when he upgraded to E39 5er rims, he changed the spindles at the center of the wheel hubs so my stock spare no longer fits! Awesome.
To top it off, my new tires don't show up on-island until next week, so Haw'n Tire + Auto wouldn't accept the vehicle to store until then ( no room). Had to bite the bullet and take it to Lex Brodies and get a POS 17in tire to throw on so I can drive the car until the Kumho's arrive.
On the bright side, my '06 Audi showed up today so at least I have transportation.
Anyhow, I'll end the rant, just felt I had to vent...somedays crap just doesn't go your way...

Wow, sorry to hear about the bad timing/luck. So the PO didn't use hubcentric rings, but rather changed the hub size to match the e39 hub size? Wow... So right now the only size that will fit are the e39 hub wheels?
99MPower 12-01-2006, 08:52 PM ouch, sorry to hear about your bad luck... I was going to BMW of Hono to get some tie rods for my E30 the other day, so I could finish my suspension update (tokico shocks, RSM's, and strut hats)... anyways, on my way there, the clutch went out, couldnt get a normal tow because previous owner SLAMMED the car, very low, and had to get a flat bed and cost $185 to get towed from ward/kapiolani to the auto port back at pearl harbor
was definately a horrible day.. waited 1.5 for the first tow truck due to traffic, and then waited another 1.5 for the second one, once we realized the first one wasnt going to work...

Exactly, E39 wheels will fit. I guess the plus side is that I have a decent wheel selection available to me w/out spacers, downside is I need to fork over $$ for an E39 spare. Anybody know of any available on the island?

Wow, no kidding. I lucked out and USAA roadside assistance picked up the towing tab (they cover towing up to 11 miles from the breakdown/flat site) no questions asked. My exhaust barely cleared the pavement though, maybe by about 1/2 a millimeter, as we put the thing onto the flatbed.

Yes, I agree. I may be partial, but I think feel that the variety of wheels available for the e39 were probably the nicest sets of wheels available for BMWs; many of which had the deep dish lip...:eyecrazy.
99MPower 12-01-2006, 09:28 PM mine definately did not clear the flat bed... i scraped the front bumper, and scraped the exhaust getting it on...
no big deal really though, as its my beater car, but I still like to take care of it "somewhat"
I had just got USAA about 3 hours before this happened, switched from geico, and their roadside assistance will be reimbursing me for the towing bill... their agent couldnt find someone with a flatbed close so I ended up doing it myself, and thats why I had to pay for it, instead of USAA just picking up the bill

Here's a tire....

Do you use 235x45x17 or smaller?
99MPower 12-01-2006, 09:57 PM i would guess a 245/40/17...

dude .... i got my car inspected by lex brodies today. I saw your car there and they even put the two side by side when they were done, i wanted to take a picture, but alas i left my camera in my room instead of my car. clean lookin' wheels btw.
E28M5 SubDriver 12-01-2006, 11:28 PM We must have just missed each other. I tried to take a photo of the blown out Dunlop, but I forgot my camera memory card at home. Damn. Thanks for the props on the wheels. I am frankly amazed that the tire didn't come off the freaking bead considering it was ripped 360 degrees around! strong sidewalls for a non-runflat. BTW is Lex Brodie shady on the inspections? If not I'm headed downtown to a joint recommended by PCP.
And in response to the other questions, I'm running a 235/45 ZR 17 all around.
NateDawg 12-01-2006, 11:50 PM "shaddy inspection"? ummm probably not its a chained company on the island, and they probably don't want that, you see my modifications ... if thats enough for me to take to them for a shady inspection then i guess they do it.... it was like 15.36 for my car, and no money under the table.
minigp 12-02-2006, 12:41 AM sorry about your luck..re: blowout. I have a Euro bumper kit (complete) for the M5 from Maximillian Imports, genuine BMW parts, including euro lights, will sell cheap. Any interest?

Yup, that was me. Damn, I am way too easy to spot. I thought I had a Q-car but I guess not.

this island is small. folks can't hide their shenanigans here...
My beater vehicle isn't shy about standing out in a parking lot, and I get calls every so often "ehh, what you doing in [enter location] last [enter day of week]..."
:)
The Beastmaster 12-03-2006, 03:33 AM I agree. I can't be incognito in a purple 540 or a red E34 Touring, but at least the P car blends in.

that's what you think. No matter how incognito a Porsche is, I spot them all :cool
besides the Boxster since it's not a real Porsche :stickoutt

Yes it is, it is the reincarnation of the 914.
Oh, wait a minute, that wasn't a real Porsche either. :)

Bwahahahaha. Looks like we have some 911 fans here.

I'm a 911 fan through and through.
I used to think the same thing about Boxsters, until I drove ours on the track. They're really not to be underestimated (though a 911 is obviously faster).
The Beastmaster 12-03-2006, 06:40 PM A Boxster will outrun and out handle a 911, but a 964 will git it a run for its money.

Here's another spare tire - only fractionally smaller that what you run. I would be okay as a spare. 225/45/17

E28M5 SubDriver 12-06-2006, 11:18 PM Guess I shoulda clarified - I have a spare tire now 235/45ZR17, I just need a rim to mount it on, preferably one that matches my other 4 (E39 528i sport package rims).
