I put this someplace else, but here goes -

I never dynoed mine stock but with conforti chip, exhaust, fogged intake and light flywheel it made 125 to the wheels. The 'Typical' M42 seems to put down 115-120hp to the wheels.

Last year I picked up a M42 powered '91 318is for a daily driver, and between 125K and 135K, it picked up a noticible amount of power and about 4-5mpg on the highway. These engines are meant to be flogged, driven hard, then spanked mercilessly with a big iron-booted right foot.

Good man. People dislike the M42 because it is unforgiving, and requires a lot more effort to drive at the limit than the sixes. Without all that nice low-end torque, cornering mistakes are a lot more costly to your times.

When I ran my M42 on a dyno years & years ago, it supposedly put down 131rwhp, 121lb-ft peak. It had a Conforti chip. There was a CAI w/ heat shield, hi-flow cat and Supersprint cat-back as well, all of which probably did nothing. Lol, must have been those pricey hi-perf 8mm ignition wires :rolleyes.

Anyway, 120-130whp seem typical for the M42. I know the E36 sees a little less HP up top due to the DISA intake manifold, but it DOES make it a little more torque'y at the lower/mid range. The attached link is to an Excel breakdown of the dyno run. Anyone got a pic or datasheet of their E36 dyno run? I have been DYING to see one from a stock-internal M42/44!

Oh and BTW, it IS possible to get 205+ hp from a NA M42. Febi Guibo over on M42Club has an INSANE M42 build mostly done, and the 205hp is with half-done software by MarkD. When he has more time he will finish it up.

These guys do amazing stuff with M42's & M44's. Pricey, but GOOD.

GrassRoots Motorsports Dynoed their 318is with the M42.. they got 119 at the wheels before bolting on the Downing Atlanta Supercharger.. then they were at 187 to the wheels.

I have heard nice things about Metric Mechanic's work. I keep thinking about a big bore engine with the supercharger kit... it is either that or a six conversion

The M50 in my 330ti put 215 down when stock.
I haven't been back since I've done chip, MAF, injectors and stuff.
On the down side, the car does feel nose heavy at times.

M5 you thinking of putting an FI on the car?NO
I've already owned a Dinan M5 turbo.
I don't need a headache like that again.
I have enough trouble as it is keeping the 330ti's rear tires hooked up.

He did the conversion.
I just cleaned it up and made it look a little better.

I did install a LSD, but it's a 3.73, so take-offs are real nice.
