View Full Version : NA performance
Analog 11-23-2006, 07:38 PM For a christmas gift to myself this year, I'd like to increse the power of my 94 540i auto(along with some lowering springs).
Here are my questions-
1.) I know alot of chips for the m20, m30 etc., but what about a good chip for the m60?
2.) Any specific upgrade, I could do without going the forced induction route?
3.) Exhaust would be nice. Could I just get a high flow cat. and get the muffler shop to put it on?
4.) Springs. I haven't found any lowering springs for 540i that aren't overseas. Lower the better. Know of some good ones?
Thanks in advance
525fourthew1n 11-23-2006, 09:56 PM 1) a chip that im looking into getting for my wagon is pretty amazing. i cant link you because im a newbie, but its called the "Bonneville Motorwerks Conforti Performance Software & Shark Injector" im not possitive that itll work for the 540, but its compatable with a lot of models. i can expect about 20% more on my car, so not too bad.
It'll adjust valve timing, fuel/air mix, removes top speed limiter [130mph+], and for me, adjusts redline from 6k to ~7k
2) just try and get as much cool air in as possible. so you can get creative, try duct work or something to get air thats not from under the hood [pretty hot stuff].
3) im not sure where to look either, but i might just have midas install a new setup when im done with some work on mine. supposedly they work with flowmaster to put a fairly nice system in. i mean, exhaust is exhaust, if something goes wrong with it, its not the worst thing in the world.

I've heard good things about the EAT chip.

Theres a lot of combos for your e34, I thought my Bavauto/Blisten combo was good.
Analog 11-23-2006, 10:13 PM On the 540, it has a pretty impressive air box, with air being taken from the front of the car, and not under the hood. I heard K&N sucked in alot more dirt than stock and decreased power???
Analog 11-23-2006, 10:23 PM I started to look at these http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp and they say only for self leveling. Isn't the 540i self-leveling?
EDIT: The link wouldn't go directly to the springs, but you get the idea.

only the 540i sports were self leveling, IIRC (aka M5 suspension)
Analog 11-23-2006, 10:45 PM Ohhhhh. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Thats good for me, I wanted some vogtlands anyways.
xatlas0 11-24-2006, 02:31 AM 1. I like my Jim Conforti chip. It has served me well for the last 4+ years.
2. Pullies seem to be a nice bump, but I don't have them and can't really comment. A trans chip, on the other hand, makes a world of difference. The biggest feeling mod was definetely the Racing Dynamics sway set. The car used to tilt like a lush, now it stays flat as a pancake during hard cornering.
3. Sure, but the cat isn't a bottleneck. Heck, none of the exhaust is a bottleneck, as exhaust upgrades are for found purposes only, or to replace failing OEM cats. I have SuperSprint, and it has a nice, Porsche-ish sound.
4. I have the Eibach Pro springs on mine, and I would not want it any lower, as I already have to stop for speed bumps. If I go over them too fast, the car will bottom out.
Before doing anything, change the ATF fluid. I know BMW says not to change it, but that is why so many of the units fail in 100k or less miles. Also note that the chip is pretty much the only source of any real gains you are going to get NA, unless you can pull off a miracle and find a set of cams or headers. Even then, those will be a minimum of 3k and give perhaps 10rwhp each, with the cams dropping the lowe end a bit.
Analog 11-24-2006, 10:25 AM Yea it's about time for me to change the ATF. I have 195,000 on mine.
