Ok so the coolant level indicator in the Dash Display is showing that my coolant level is ever so slowly dropping... Problem is (and I feel like an idiot for asking this question) I can't find a seperate coolant resevoir like on my old Jetta/Rabbits. Is the coolant resevoir directly attached to the side of the Rad? In any case, if thats the resevoir, than its full up to the top. Is it possible that my coolant level sensor is slowly decaying and not working properly? I don't have an owners manual for my car so I can't just take a quick look at its directions. Appreciate any help. BTW I drive a 525 with the M50 VANOS, if that helps.

The coolant reservoir is at the back of the engine in front of the windshield. I think you may be looking at the windshield washer fluid reservoir by the radiator.

Here is a pic. of the coolant reservoir, attached to the left side of the radiator on my 525 M50 vanos. Mine also shows ' coolant level' now and then on the dash, but it is always spot on. There is a line about half way up the bottle where the max line is. Hope this helps.

yeah I figured that the resevoir was attached to the rad, but its full right up to the line that suggests how full it should be. Ok next stop, coolant level sensor... :) yeh when I topped up my windshield washer fluid I had a holy shit moment when I took a better look and couldnt find the coolant resevoir, thought maybe I'd put 4 litres of washer fluid into my coolant system, until I started to think that theres no way my coolant system was that empty without some serious over heating. I also had my mom take a look and translate the writing on the resevoir(although that only helped slightly), its pretty handy to have someone in the family whos first language is german.

You may need a new coolant level sensor. It is pretty fragile. There is a little foam floaty thing. anyways it is mounted near the bottom of the reservoir tank. It is a easy install.

Side note...if you leave the radiator cap on while you change it you won't lose as much fluid. Makes it easier to do the quick swap and minimize your loss :)

yeah I've been desperately hoping its the sensor because I've watched it read a level thats been slowly decreasing. I've been nervously checking my oil for coolant, and my coolant for oil, but everything seems good. It should, the motor only has 50 000km's on it.
