View Full Version : how bad are the MA winters?
BillE36 11-23-2006, 02:09 PM hey i just moved up to MA from long island and i was wondering how bad the roads get during the winter. i have no set of spare wheels for my car only the kosei k1's and i wanted to know if i should be freaking out to get a set of winter wheels. i figure since there just a silver painted finish it shouldint be too bad there not chrome or anything. do they put alot of salt down on the roads? any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Kevin E21 11-23-2006, 02:40 PM Winters, can vary. Sometimes they can be pretty mild, sometimes they can be crazy. New England is pretty unpredictable. Yes they do use salt/sand on the roads. You don't have to go crazy, but I would get some winter wheels/tires soon. There is really no way to tell if there will be snow next week, or not until January, but it's good to be prepared.
They're pretty good about keepin major roadways, and highways clear, but like most places when a big storm hits, there isn't many places to really go. If there is a big storm, usually the roads are all set by the next morning for the commute.

I'm sure your wheels will be ok. The salt/sand shouldn't hurt it if they're just alloy. I certainly wouldn't be driving on anything with chrome or a polished lip, but I think your wheels should be fine. If you feel comfortable with your tires then you'll be all set. Mainly I would be concerned with traction.
Where do you go to school?
Sam 325i 11-23-2006, 06:23 PM I'm all around New England at all times for work, and you gotta have 2 sets.
I have the stock 16's on Michelin snows for the winter and 17" M3's wrapped around Pirelli P6's for the summer.
Would recommend this setup.
themadhatter 11-23-2006, 06:27 PM if that's your only means of getting around, get yourself a set of snow tires. since you're driving a 328, you can fit 15" stockers for around $100 for a set + 15" snows which will save you plenty of money.
Evergreen Dan 11-23-2006, 08:28 PM I agree. If you need to be places in winter, you need dedicated snows, and the smaller and narrower the better. Lots of people use Blizzaks; I happen to like my Nokian Hakkapelitta's.
If your life is such that you can stay in one place for a day or so after it snows and give the DPWs time to plow and salt, then you can probably get by with just your summer tires. If it starts to snow when you're not home, you may be screwed.
Another alternative is to mount winters on your existing rims. The disadvantages are that you probably can't fit as narrow a tire, and obviously it would be your stock rim diameter. Another disadvantage is paying for 2 extra mount/balances per year, and possible damage to the rims and/or tires. I did do this for a while my my previous (non-BMW) car. If you can find cheap steel winter rims for your car, then the breakeven point is probably just a couple of years.
VenomRS4 11-23-2006, 11:24 PM I agree with getting a second set of rims with snow tires. New England is full of hills and twisty roads so you are going to have a hard time getting around in the snow without going off the road if you just use summer tires. Plus, why even risk hurting the finish on your nice wheels.
You can find a set of stock rims on ebay for cheap. Then just get some snow tires and your all set. I highly reccomend doing this or something like it. Maybe even someone on here has a cheap set of steelies or something they will sell for cheap.
raydoc 11-24-2006, 01:43 PM Buy some cheap knockoff rims for snows, or steelee wheelees, or take offs from RimPro or Rim and Wheelworks.
You NEED snow tires. It is very, very embarassing to get stuck on, say 93 or maybe the pike with no grip. Like, maybe going out past the Alston tolls (deceptively uphill), or maybe actually trying to get off of the Pike (all the ramps to UP!).
No, I don't know this first hand, it was a friend of mine. Yeah, a friend of mine.
JBURGS47 11-24-2006, 05:04 PM real question is how bad are MA drivers??!!

Reaaaaaaal Bad!
PixMan 11-24-2006, 06:19 PM If you hit http://boston.craigslist.org/pts/ you'll be able to find a set of mounted snows for CHEAP money. That's where I got my set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2's for $250.
I do recommend putting some on. That will assure you rarely, if ever, actually need them. If you DON'T put snows on, it's almost a guarantee you'll get stuck in a blizzard. Another version of Murphy's Law, and he lives in Southie.
I found this one right away: http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/pts/239220185.html

the k1s are painted, they won't get 'jacked up'.
525iT_Feen 11-27-2006, 04:02 AM I have winter wheels just to spare my self the hassle of getting stuck...
If I were you I would seriously consider investing in some just for the comfort. Where are you located? Rt.1 is usually pretty well groomed.

Yea my buddy had my car. Calvin. He drives the beige RSX that jumps up and down like it has cut springs. :rofl
My friend Dave goes there too. He drive the red SRT-4 with NH plates.
Anyway, I think you should keep an eye on craigslist and see if you can grab something.

Thanks. I apreciate the comments. It has a long way to go. My friend wouldn't pop the hood and was telling everyone it was an m3. I told him he's dumb but I guess he was just enjoying the moment. lol.
You can try and take it easy as far as the wheels go. Just was them regularly. They shouldn't take to much of a beating. Where are you originally from?
Kangamangus 11-28-2006, 03:20 PM Snow tires are required!!!!!!!!
You will not want to deal with getting stuck on the side of the road.
Your summer tires will not compare to snow tires.
Literally a night and day difference!!
Search CraigsList!
You will be very glad you picked up a set!
