My car is 2005 X5. The key was stolen at home last night. So, the burglar should know it to my Bimmer.

I went to the BMW dealer. A guy recommend me to replace the whole lock system which cost about $1500. I asked him if I can just order a new key(about $180) then they re-code/re-program the lock system. He said yes but the burglar can still use the lost key to steal my vehicle.

Is it true? Since one of my friend lost his Mini's key but just re-program the lock, he was told the lost key would not start the engine after that.

Need help. Thanks

take your vehicle into the dealer tell them the samething they car disable the key as they did with the mini key. They can get in the vehicle but can't start it. So no he can't steal your car. Who the hell told you that anyways.

A complete moron.

The starting portion of the key can be disabled so the car will not start with that key. I would also recomend that you order your new key or at the very least reinitalize the keys you have so the keyless function doesn't work.

The key can be barred/removed from the use of starting your X5. But the key will still allow access to your interior.

depending on where you lost the key and who has it I would probably go with the entire redoing of the locking system.

If the guy knows which car is yours then allowing them access to just the interior is bad enough but however if the guy doesn't know your car then save the money and just get a new key and reprogram

Just get it reprogramed. There's no need in having to replace the whole locking system for $1500. If the a$$hole has the balls to come back to your place and ends up stealing your car thats what insurance is for.

Or you could just have your insurance company pay the $1500 to have the locks changed. You really want to let this theif have access to your car? This is the very same way that the 1st four B5 Audi RS4's delivered were stolen. The theives broke into the homes, took the keys, and made off with the car. Granted, they didn't leave the property without the car, but still. Hope it's still there in the morning!

Yeah but the Audi's were stolen because they had the keys and took it right there. His X5 keys were stolen but the dumbass didnt steal the car..now all he has to do is get it reprogrammed and if the thief comes back he wont be able to start it. He'll get in but wont be able to take off with it. Put an alarm on it if it doesnt already come with one.

Still though, am I the only one that frequently has items of value inside their car? Not to mention the things that are always there like radio, ID, money, credit cards, or whatever. You INS. co should really buck up on this.
