View Full Version : Touring Sunroof leaking
Itsnotme1988 11-22-2006, 04:53 PM I am pretty sure my suroof on my touring is leaking. From the back of the panel, to the rear hatch, the headliner is wet, as well as the carpet in the back and the storage compartments on the sides (thankfully I don't have a CD changer yet). How difficult is it to fix, keeping in mind it doesn't work yet? The PO globed silicone on it as a fix it seems, but it still appears to be leaking.:(
The gasket on realoem is $85! And it looks to be pretty complicated to change. I looked through my Bentley, but it only tells of the sedan sunroof. Are they pretty similar?
IamCatman 11-22-2006, 05:50 PM I don't know what you mean by 'similar' ...the Touring has a double sunroof that the sedans don't have.

attack eagle 11-22-2006, 06:01 PM OUch... if it was working it would be easy to clean the raqils out, resynch, cross fingers and have the leak go away.
OR Clean drains etc. Without it moving... I have no idea how you are going to fix anything.

I meant as far as mounting etc. Maybe at least a little:(
Didn't think it would be, guess I was too optimistic.

Not what I wanted to hear:(
moroza 11-22-2006, 07:51 PM I'll pretend you have a sedan, and maybe this'll help you:
Try opening it manually - pop off the sunroof control panel, and you should see a round thingamajig with a hex wrench opening. Use a hex wrench (duh) and turn it to open the roof. That should help you some in figuring out where the leak is. It could be the sunroof seal, but more likely, it's the drain hoses. The sunroof seal shouldn't be too hard to replace. The drain hoses will probably involve removing the headliner, which is a bit of a PITA but hard to screw up.
Do you have two sunroofs, and if so, which one do you think is leaking?

+1
My other touring had clogged drains and leaked.
IamCatman 11-22-2006, 09:40 PM OK ...since I own a touring ...tell me more about cleaning the drains. It sounds like I may be in for some preventative maintenance. Apologies for hijacking your thread.

Itsnotme1988 11-22-2006, 09:51 PM I believe it is the rear one, as that is where the water is. It looks as if it is leaking out of the back of the rear sunroof, and running through the headliner.
No problem Catman, as that is always good to know.
attack eagle 11-23-2006, 12:34 AM I have used weedwhacker line to fish thru the hoses and clear blockages followed by water (very slow trickle from a hose) & more fishing to help flush the rest out, though I don't know if said procedure will work on a BMW.
My problem with leaking turned out to be leaf debris
moroza 11-23-2006, 07:01 AM Drano as a last resort...
attack eagle 11-23-2006, 07:12 AM Perhaps I should clarifiy that I used the aforementioned procedure on CARS (DSMs), not a bathroom sink?
moroza 11-23-2006, 08:25 AM Mental note: be clearer about sarcasm.
Mr Project 11-23-2006, 10:52 AM If you have an air compressor handy, I've had good luck with turning it down to 30 or 50 psi and then blowing air down the drains as well. Then sometimes I'll follow that up with a gentle water spray from the hose nozzle to make sure it's really clear.
I've had to do this once or twice on my wife's Saab, haven't needed it yet on the Touring, but that big double-sunroof really accumulates a lot of crap, so this should probably be a periodic maintenance thing.
