View Full Version : Clutch
stefang 11-19-2006, 06:09 PM So I just picked up my new '03 vert and on the way home (from Minneapolis) I noticed a little weirdness. In 5th or 6th doing 70 or so if I put my foot to the floor (the right one) the revs would rise slightly, then dip again - as if the clutch was slipping. The car has 30K on is so the ckutch SHOULD be fine, but I didn't get to observe the PO's driving technique. You could hear the engine rev too, it wasn't just a tach glitch. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Stef
dave1025bmw 11-20-2006, 07:25 AM Possible vaccum leak somewhere? That's where I would start if I were in your situation.
///M3N@CE 11-20-2006, 11:52 AM Why are you doing 70 in 5th? Let alone 6th????
Your lugging your engine.

what...so when you're on the hwy doing 70 are you in 3rd or 4th? sorry this just seems like a retarded post
OP, SMG or 6MT?
Kevlar 11-20-2006, 04:13 PM Sounds like clutch slip to me... just because it is 30k miels doesn't mean the clutch should be fine. The PO may have beat the clutch to death.

Uhh...youve never done 70 in 4th?? How is that retarded?
You should take a driving course rookie.
Kevlar 11-20-2006, 04:43 PM Settle down... crusing in 4th gear at 70 is not necessary and I wouldn't consider driving in 6th at 70 lugging the engine either. Granted in 4th you have more pulling power, but your gas consumption is also higher.
Can it be done... is it required, no.

ok paul walker...get back to the fast and furious. See when im COMMUTING since this is my daily driver, i am in 6th anytime im over 55mph...engine is not bogged down either. If you have smg try putting it into automatic mode and see what gear it selects...its amazing cause it selects 6th! guess bmw needs to take a driving course too..damn rookies :rolleyes the op obviously wasnt flogging it (in which case 3rd would be the optimal gear @ 70) so there is no point in going to 4th no matter how you look at it...either 6th for cruising, 5th for passing or 3rd for balls to the wall..
///M3N@CE 11-20-2006, 05:54 PM There is no point in going into 4th???? HUH???? So you keep it in 3rd at 70 for what....1 sec before you shift to 4th???? You need help.
You just solidified your stupidity.
P.S.-Paul Walker would kick your ass.

i now question wether you really own an m3...3rd starts right at 62mph..please tell me how at 70 you need to shift into 4th...seriously you are obviously a troll..3rd is good till 90+...
RN WC 11-20-2006, 06:12 PM Your clutch is slipping. My CPO car had the clutch replaced at 27K before I bought it. It felt just like you described. Lots of stop and go traffic, add a CDV, and possibly an inexperienced driver and you can wear a clutch very quickly. Turn around and take it back. See if you can get your money back or get the clutch fixed. Dealer told me it was a $2000+ repair, but they paid - of course I still had my cashiers check in my pocket and had one foot out the door. I was also more than a little pissed off since I took a day off from work and flew to Houston to pick up the car.

how did you figure out he has a 6mt...or did i miss something. He could just need to reset the SMG unit but havent figured out if he has SMG or not...probably not or he would have mentioned it but just checkin all options before he buys a new clutch

are you serious? at 70 mph in 6th the rpm's are around 3,000, not lugging the engine
stefang 11-20-2006, 07:17 PM It's a 6MT, And I see no reason why I shouldn't be in 6th when I'm just cruising along, but can we please not let it deteriorate into a flame war on this (non) topic?
Taking it back is not an option. The car is CPO, in fact it's still under original warranty and maint. Is a clutch covered or am I about to get into a fight?

from what ive read it depends...just bitch enough though especially since you just bought the car and they shoudl take care of it...cause thats BS. Its obviously your clutch needing to replaced since its 6mt. though you may have to take it up with the dealer you bought it from..id try local first though
Kevlar 11-20-2006, 07:26 PM Clutch not covered by CPO warranty...

he said its still under factory warranty/maint though...that should mean he's ok right?
Kevlar 11-20-2006, 08:12 PM If he inquires, maybe they will replace it ... but I do not believe it to be covered unless he has a good relationship with the dealership.
stefang 11-27-2006, 09:38 PM It's covered under maintenance, according to two dealerships - including the one replacing it. Phew!
madturk 11-27-2006, 09:58 PM Depens how you drive I suppose my clutch was out at 24K miles. The dealer was not too happy. You car is 03 with less than 50K miles take it in let them change it.
