View Full Version : do e46 m3 come with govenors? bmwwindout 11-18-2006, 04:15 PM what the title says.... AIrey1507 11-18-2006, 05:15 PM yes, most likely 155mph (like most cars that are capable of going faster) Kevlar 11-18-2006, 06:11 PM yes bmwwindout 11-18-2006, 06:59 PM word and stuff well hit 170 last night in the lady friend's lsb.. and she judt bought it so i guess it has something done to it. Kevlar 11-18-2006, 07:08 PM The governor is based on a different calculation than the speedometer. While the speedometer reads 170, your actual ground speed is much less. You were probably doing more like 150 as opposed to 170. VADER13 11-18-2006, 07:16 PM The governor is based on a different calculation than the speedometer. While the speedometer reads 170, your actual ground speed is much less. You were probably doing more like 150 as opposed to 170. This seems like an unusually large difference--though I believe there is likely to be some calibration error in the gauge, 20 MPH appears excessive. Kevlar 11-18-2006, 07:54 PM The acceptable error for the speedometer at the far right of the guage is approximately 2.9% +10mph. 170 - (170*2.9%+10mph) = 155. T6 Driver 11-18-2006, 08:34 PM 2.9% error +10 MPH... that's diappointingly large, though I suppose it's believable. What's your source? (not questioning your numbers, just wondering where they came from) Kevlar 11-18-2006, 09:36 PM Honestly... I don't remember, I think it was from a piece of BMW literature directly from BMW, but it's been so long I can't remember anymore. egyptntree 11-19-2006, 01:38 AM BMW will directly aknowledge that there is a 3% difference in their speedometers. And I think by law it can be up to 6%. Brian W 11-19-2006, 05:26 AM The European regulation ECE-R 39 states essentially that the speed indicated must never be lower than the true speed or higher by more than one-tenth of true speed plus four kilometers per hour (79.5 mph at a true 70). Never low. Not even if somebody swaps a big set of 285/35R-18s for stock 255/45R-16s. BMW speedometers read high by an average of 4.54%. 274 11-19-2006, 07:37 AM Hm... I heard (from the forums so I don't know how true this is really) that 5th gear is NOT limited, meaning you can redline 5th gear, which should get you to about those speeds. Though once you shift to 6th, the governor kicks in and power is decreased until you reach 160 give or take. I dunno, but this topic was brought up a few times over at another forum and many people experienced this. 274 11-19-2006, 07:40 AM OT: Kevlar, you're selling your car!? 252kw 11-19-2006, 07:46 AM I hit 270km/h when my limiter kicked in, so I guess I was actually doing 250km/h (155mph). Kevlar 11-19-2006, 03:50 PM OT: Kevlar, you're selling your car!? It is for sale ... first $30k gets it. bmwwindout 11-19-2006, 03:59 PM well i passed my boy in his e36 that was goin 155 like he was standing still and it felt like the car still had a little bit more in it..anyways i did not mean to start all these debates.. io just wanted to know if the car had been chiped or programed by the previous owner. 274 11-20-2006, 03:34 PM It is for sale ... first $30k gets it. How many miles on it? Your knowleadge on the car will be missed in this forum. Whats next? :) Kevlar 11-20-2006, 03:46 PM How many miles on it? Your knowleadge on the car will be missed in this forum. Whats next? :) 90k miles... and the selling price has dropped to 28k now because it has a stock muffler on it. I'm looking at a MZ4 roadster for the time being, so I won't be going far. Plus, just because I'm selling the car doesn't mean I won't be by here to help out. Thats M Life 11-20-2006, 06:31 PM a mz4 to hold you over for the v8 m3 right!? Kevlar 11-20-2006, 06:48 PM a mz4 to hold you over for the v8 m3 right!? bingo Thats M Life 11-20-2006, 06:56 PM no offense but ill hate you with envy when you get one lol...i know most people will bash it for being a v8 or being heavier...not looking as nice as an e46...but thats the same crap the e46m3 went through when it first came out from the e36 crowd and look at it now! I just hope to get one in 2-3 years when i get a few more years at my job under my belt...not too mention no banks want to finance a 21yo for anything over 30-35k..lucky i got this car |
