View Full Version : Power between 2k-3k - 95 M3
jgardiner 12-23-2002, 02:56 PM Greetings,
I seem to be getting a bit of loss of power between 2k - 3k rpm. Almost as if my timing is being retarded. No CE and I doubt it is my clutch slipping due to the fact it doesn't matter how much throttle I'm giving it.
Only thing new is I just recently changed the oil. Ideas? :dunno
AaronM3 12-23-2002, 03:57 PM same situation here josh... BMW dealership couldnt find anything wrong with the car, yet the problem persists

Aaron,
How many miles are on your car and when was the last time your belts were replaced?
Mine has 88k on it and my mechanic said I need new belts, that might be it? I highly doubt it though.. I don't see how.
LeVik 12-23-2002, 04:16 PM I have a similiar problem. When I'm giving it gas, not WOT or not even getting on it, it seems as though the power just seems weak around 2,5 or 3K, then after that it's fine.
Anybody know about this problem? Thanks.
kevin7909 12-23-2002, 04:21 PM possibly its because the car is driven in traffic more often than 'hard' so its learning that style and being more efficient at the price of less power when u want it to run..just guessing here...ask the dealership to reset the ECU and see if u feel more power....then let us know :)

Precisely!
LeVik 12-23-2002, 04:29 PM Well I get into traffic every once in a while, however, I also open her up too from time to time. You pretty much have to. Do you think I'm driving in traffice too much and not opening her up too often?
I did a chemical fuel clean at my shop, it cleans through the linings and the entire fuel system, getting rid of buildups and such. So I doubt it has something to do with the fuel, because it would only get worse at the engine speeds increased, but that's not happening, it's just at that RPM range.
I'm still lost as to what the problem is....damn!
kevin7909 12-23-2002, 04:32 PM honestly i was guessing based on the following....mine does the same thing..go to the dealer and they do a service on it....runs like a bat out of hell....give it a week or two...it feels slower..now i must admit this could be because we all just get used to the power after awhile and it starts feeling slow, but that doesnt explain why when i drive it in to the dealer it feels slow and when i drive it out the same day 2 or 3 hours after it feels fast......

Here is something interesting. I had a CE light on until I had my oil changed. Change the oil, CE light goes away. However, BMW Dealer told me that the check engine code was for O2 sensor. Of course, this is the same dealer that told me they checked off fluids and the next day I get lifter tick.. oh.. barely any oil. Thanks Dealer.
I'm determined to figure out wtf this is. Do any of you have any software upgrades?
kevin7909 12-23-2002, 04:42 PM i dont have any software upgrades....
Kevin
LeVik 12-23-2002, 05:31 PM No software upgrade here either. It can't be the O2 sensor. I really can't find a decent explanation for this problem and I can't find what it could possibly be!
jgardiner 12-24-2002, 03:10 PM Just an update. I'm working with StrictlyBMW to hopefully solve this mystery powerband issue.. :dunno :dunno :dunno :dunno
kevin7909 12-24-2002, 03:12 PM ask them to reset the ECU then let us know if that helps..it seems to change how my car runs...

I've noted that.
AaronM3 12-24-2002, 08:31 PM you can reset the ECU by unplugging your battery and leaving it overnight like that then hooking it back up in the morning. I did this.. no help. :(
iwannadinanm3 12-24-2002, 08:36 PM u guys sure its just that u guys have gotten used to the power by now? or maybe jus the 3.0 is like that down low in the rev range?

Confident that isn't the issue.. just look at dyno graphs from stock M3s. :)
AaronM3 12-24-2002, 10:15 PM definitely not the issue since i have a custom 3.3L S52 engine..... definitely something is up
iwannadinanm3 12-25-2002, 12:04 AM ahhh ok hehe jus a suggestion, well then... i wonder what it may be. also that thing where u guys said that if u drive it hard for a few days continuously and it will adjust to those settings, or if u drive it easy for a few days, then open her up for one day, that one day it wont perform as good because it's been adjusted for 'easy driving' i believe only applies to obd 2 cars, thats what i've been told so from people on the forums.
Did you change the oil weight? A thicker oil will change the character of your motor, some say it doesn't, but if you feel your car acting different from day to day, you'll notice the difference it weights.
I ran some injector cleaner in my car, went the the track and ran some 104 octane... everything was fine, till about two weeks later I began to notice the upper rpms of first gear to be very weak. I changed the oil from 20w50 to 10w30, drove it hard a few times, and the problem went away.
To me it seems all Bosch sensored motors never run the same each day, the motronic system on a VW 16v runs different all the time, its either on point... or far off. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe we also have a "Bosch Motronic" engine management.
Visit a dyno and get some hp/trq #'s... then work on it from there!
mattolsen 06-09-2004, 02:01 PM I'm sure you guys realize this, but maybe someone else who just got an M3 and is reading this thread might smack themselves in the forehead over this one. As ashamed as I am to admit this, I had my 97 M3 for 2 MONTHS before I figured out what the $%#$ing 'ASC' button does! I know, I know, sad, sad. But with ASC engaged (and it is by default) the computer will cut power to the wheels to prevent them from spinning, no matter how hard you push the gas pedal. For 2 damn MONTHS I was like, "this is an M3! How come it has no power in low gears? How come I can't bust the tires loose?" When I finally pushed that button and shut the ASC off (the light comes ON when asc is OFF, that makes NO sense!) it was a completely different car........ 'course I needed new rear tires 3 months later!
