View Full Version : Manual Transmission Fluid
al95ti 11-09-2006, 12:44 PM I want to change the fluid in my Getrag 5 Speed and I have no clue what to put in.. I went and asked at NAPA and they said to put just some regular ATF... Is this true??
Questions :
1) What kind of fluid goes in manual tranny ?
2) Is regular ATF okay ?
Thanks guys and gals
Al
EDIT : I have searched the forum and have not found a definitive answer...
angel318ti 11-09-2006, 12:47 PM I'm not sure but it doesn't sound right. most cars use 80-90W
dustent 11-09-2006, 01:41 PM It uses ATF.
Try Royal Purple Synchromax or Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF fluid. I've used both, Sychromax feels better, but it's harder to find locally.

I use Royal Purple Max-Gear in the differential. It doesn't require LSD additive (if you have LSD).

How much synchromax should I need ??
And would it be a good idea to change the diff fluid aswell ??

1.2 quarts for the tranny. Get a fluid pump before you do it, otherwise it's a bitch to get the fluid into the tranny.
If you haven't changed the diff fluid, do it. I use 75w90 for the diff and I think you'll need 1.1 quarts, but I've never been able to get that extra .1 in so just buy one quart.
ClubSportCohort 11-09-2006, 10:56 PM I've tried Mobil 1 ATF, Redline MTL, and Redline D4 ATF, and the D4 shifts the smoothest. You should need almost 2 qts in the tranny.
dustent 11-10-2006, 12:36 PM Also, make sure the car is level when you fill it. Use 4 jack stands or a lift. The Sta-lube pump works great. Available at also all parts store and Harbor Freight.
mphmotorwerks 11-10-2006, 04:19 PM I've use Royal Purple Synchromax and live behind it....a buddy of mine uses it in his drag racer, so I figure if it can stand up to shift and heat and pressure like that, I shouldn't have any problems.
torjthm 11-14-2006, 10:07 PM i use Red Line fluids in my car ... altho im not sure you can get it .. make funn of me if you want .. but is a japanese company and they make great producs ... all of my fluids are from them and the work great ... and i figure if a 500hp D1 drift car can use it it can work on my 90hp ti .. lol
windnsea00 11-15-2006, 02:25 PM I have been using Liqui Moly ATF III in my `97 318ti and brother's `93 325is, both gearboxes are Getrag and shift very smooth.

i read several articles here and there... and personal experience. redline is the stuff. has the highest frictional results. you'll probably catch a few ponies from it and it feels superb. worth the money and everyone that owns a bmw related shop whether its bikes or cars uses redline. fyi....
ive got royal purple in my diff at the moment and it feels really nice too. but according to eurotuner and various other shops, redline.
