Well, sadly it's time to sell my 1997 M3 sedan, which I've owned for the past 5 years. It's been a great car that I've put a lot of love into. I've owned the car since it had around 45k miles on it. It's got approx. 106,000 miles on it at this time, and I've only been driving it about once a week since buying another car a little while ago.

This M3 is an Arctic Silver, 5-speed manual with black leather luxury interior, with the wood trim package and heated power front seats. I did replace the lux front grill slats with the black plastic mesh piece that comes on the sport package. It has staggered M-Contour wheels with Michelin PS2's all around. Summer tires have about 20k miles on them.

Over the years I have had the more major maintenance done at a local independent shop, such as a new clutch at around 95k miles, and new brakes (including new front calipers) about a year before that. Other than those items, I've done most of the lesser maintenance myself, such as a new water pump, thermostat, belts & hoses at around 95k miles. Ever since that first $100 oil change at the stealer  I have changed my own oil every 3k miles with Mobil 1. The engine and transmission feel rock-solid. In fact I like the shifting feel in this car better than my E39 M5. I replaced the RTAB's using Koala's rental tool when I changed out the suspension, at about 90k miles. Changed the fuel filter and spark plugs (NGK Iridium) in summer of 06.

Mods/adds include: X-brace, ECIS intake (filter re-oiled once a year), Koni SA's, Eibach Pro-Kit springs, GC RSM's, clear corners, ZKW headlights with 4500k HID and Stongard on all front lights, two sets of floor mats (the new set has the M3 logo on them), factory keyless entry and alarm.

Exterior: There is no rust on this vehicle. The paint is in excellent shape other than a few stone chips on the hood near the front grilles, and about a 3-inch scratch where a piece of tire flew up from a car in front of me on the freeway and hit me on the front end near the right turn signal. There are also a few scratches on the underside of the side skirts where it appears a previous owner tried to drive over a curb or something. There is about a one-inch gouge on the front end between the left headlight and the kidney grilles, where it looks like someone pulled a hit & run on me in a parking lot. Not too noticeable from a distance but it's there so I thought I'd mention it.

I've used P21S wax and polish on it twice a year. I use Black Again on the trim about every other month, and Meguiar's Vinyl and Rubber treatment on the tires. In between washes I've used Griot's speed shine. The wheels are not perfect. Two of them have some curb rash but the other two are fine. There is also a full-size spare with one of the original Michelin Pilot Mxx3's on it in the trunk.

Interior: I used the 2-part Leatherique treatment on the seats this past summer, but before that I used Meguiar's gold class leather conditioner twice a year. There are the usual wear areas on the side bolsters (especially the driver's side) but not bad for a 9.5-year old car, especially after rejuvenating with Leatherique. I use Lexol Vinylex on the dash, and Griot's glass cleaner on the windows. I use a UVS100 sun shield in the front window year-round.

It has the 18-button OBC, which works perfectly, no display problems. The radio display, however, has the common "dim display" problem, where I need to re-flow some of the solder connections on the display board. I have the printed out instructions on the fix, and I bought a new resistor and light bulb to fix it but just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

Living in Minneapolis, I have driven this car sparingly in the winter when the roads were clear and dry, on separate winter wheels and tires which are also available to the buyer if desired.

I'm asking $13,000. The car is located in Minneapolis, MN.

If interested, send me a PM and we can talk.

Thanks for looking. Here's a few pics for now, I'll try to get some more up later.

Edit: added more pics. Price reduced as of 1-17-07.

Excellent Car.

Questions:
Do you have most of your records for the car?
Have the E36 "failures" water pump etc been replaced?
How flexible on the price are you?

Don't quote me on it, but I read on the forums that the 97s all received the updated water pump.

Well, I replaced the water pump, thermostat, belts & hoses myself with OEM parts that I bought from BMAparts.com, back in January 05. The thermostat had started to fail "open", where the temp gauge would never go quite to the middle. Hasn't given me a problem since. The water pump is the oem black "composite" impeller one, not the metal impeller one.

I'm a little flexible on the price (hence the "or best offer") but I really can't take any lowballs since I had to throw a big chunk of money at the M5.

I have extensive maintenance records for the car, at least since I've owned it. The file is about an inch thick! Some stuff isn't in there since I did it myself, like the cooling system and suspension, but I believe I can print out some receipts from my online purchases if desired.

Here's a couple shots of the two front-end scratches, and the pass. side bolster. Sorry for the crap quality, I took these when it was dark out.

So the PS2's have 20K miles on them? Aren't they shot then? What is the winter package? Does the car have any signs of paint bubbling under the door jambs on the driver's side? This is very common on midwest/northern cars. Are you the 2nd owner? Any accidents or body panels replaced? Is the title clear and in hand? And lastly, how flexible are you on that $13.5K price? I'm looking at many less than 80K M3's with full maintanence for that price.

JohnH

The PS2's are in excellent condition with plenty of treadlife left. I'll try to take some pics of the treadwear, since they're off the car right now anyway.

The car has heated seats, and right now on the car there's a separate set of wheels (AT Italia Type 5 contour knock-offs) with the winter tires on them.

No signs of paint bubbling on the door jambs. I can take some close-ups this weekend if you'd like. Contact me privately with your email so I can send them to you. The car was not driven daily in the winter. I would always wait till the roads were clear and dry again since I have a winter beater, but the car wasn't stored either. I also washed it bi-weekly in the winter months.

I believe I am the 2nd owner. The Carfax I ran on it when I got the car seems to say that it was a lease return vehicle before I bought it from a local Buick dealership.

No accidents, no panels replaced. All VIN numbers match. Title is clear and I have it in hand. Car is paid for.

I'm somewhat flexible on that asking price. I realize the car has over 100k miles but I've maintained it to a high standard and it drives better today than it did when I got it. Make me an offer privately.

Fair enough. Thanks for answering my questions. If you'd like, you can email me any other pics or info to shockwave318@yahoo.com We can also talk price through that ave if needed. I live in northern IL, so we aren't too far away.

I'll give you a bajillion dollars if you can get this car to me in New York.

On a serious note, bump for a sweet ride. If someone was so inlcined I bet they could get more than 90% of the wear out of that leather with a little time with one of those leathrique products.

I am interested and am located in Minneapolis. Could we meet up so I can take a look? I currently drive a 95M3 and am looking to get into a 4 door. I would have to sell my car, but would like to take a look at yours to see if it something I would part with my car for. Please email me at jasonmbrand@gmail.com I believe I emailed your autotrader account today as well.

I just put a fresh new battery in it (Interstate MTP-91) a couple weeks ago and I'll throw in a free oil change (still have a few Mahle filters in the garage) so it should be good to go for road trips!
