View Full Version : E39 M5 vs. E46 M3 *VID*
Leo540i 11-06-2006, 02:22 AM -So I just finished breaking in my UUC race clutch/lightweight flywheel and that is my only mod.
-My buddy with the E46 M3 SMG on the other hand has an intake, catback exhaust, dinan stage 1 chip, and underdrive pulleys.
We had many runs from all kinds of different speeds (from a stop, from a 40 roll, 20 roll, 50 roll, 70 roll) and the majority of the outcomes were similar to this one on the video clip.
P.S. In the video, you are in my M5 and my passenger (about 200 lbs) is video taping. The M3 only has the driver in the car.
Enjoy

MysterGoode 11-06-2006, 02:46 AM What's great is it still feels like a couch even at 100+
ohnoes 11-06-2006, 03:22 AM A 318 would slaughter both with only weight reduction and A/C delete mods. :redspot
Not exactly suprising.
+1
Leo540i, you have a thing against E46 M3s, "dontcha" ;)

i love e46 m3's. im always helping my buddy work on his and i love seing them around, they are amazing cars. But with his mods i expected him to beat me especially low end :dunno

honestly, with his mods i wouldn't expect to see significant hp gains
gains from intakes are debatable on the e46 M3, some report gains, some report a loss of power on the dyno. many actually believe the stock airbox is best.
by catback exhaust, are you saying he has sections 1, 2 and a muffler? the cats are in the headers on the e46 M3, so my guess is he's only got a muffler. either way, if you aren't talking headers you will not see significant hp gains from a muffler alone... maybe a few hp
pullies, again, not much... maybe a few hp
and dinan stage 1 software... little to no actual power gains
DREWHALL 11-06-2006, 11:01 AM Already been said but that M5 sounds sick! Nice vid.
Armo95 11-06-2006, 04:09 PM I've had similar experiences with the E46 M3. It looks like you went from a freeway pull, right? What mph?
I'm looking to run an S54 M Roader/Coupe; should be a much better matchup.
evo connevo 11-06-2006, 06:18 PM It was closer than i expected. Those mods maybe gave him 10whp? M3s trap like 105 compared to 108-110 for the M5s. When did the race end, maybe you would have pulled him harder the faster you went? Actually, you know what, switch the camera man into the other car and it would have pulled a few more cars, easily. Good run for the 5er, definitely fast.
NickAD 11-06-2006, 07:00 PM Nice run! I bet that UUC flywheel/clutch combo made a huge difference though...the stock flywheel only weighs 40lbs :rolleyes... The UUC flywheel weighs what? like in the teens?
Leo540i 11-06-2006, 11:55 PM Thanks guys, and yea I see what you mean about his mods, they probably didn't add too much power but I guess I over-estimated the M3 :dunno
The race in that video was from about a 30-40ish roll, and took it upto im guessing like 85?
But when we did run on the freeway, the higher the speeds the harder I would pull on him.
The lightweight flywheel combo is fucking badass!!!! :buttrock And if I ever mis-shift or launch bad..that M3 will be hard to pass so that makes it pretty fun to run around with him as well.
It was my first set of real races with the beast so I'm still pretty excited about it :)

oh, crap, I mistook you for someone else, nm. Nice race! :buttrock

I've been debating on getting this combo. Does the car rev more freely? How much was the total cost? I know the flywheel on this car weighs quite a bit and the UUC one is a fraction of the weight. How does the car drive with the combo? Any extra chatter?

Well it definately revs alot nicer, and the car actually sounds a bit more beast too with it. I got the stage 1 kit for 2500 shipped, its a oem clutch itself (v12 size clutch) and with the lightweight flywheel, reinforced pressure plate, throwout bearing, ect. It comes with everything (just make sure they send you the alignment tool, they forgot mine and it made the installation harder).
The whole uuc clutch assembly itself weighs 13.5 lbs less than the oem clutch, and it is bigger :D
There is a bit of chatter once the car is warmed up, and the clutch pedal is not pressed in...i just hold the pedal down at stop lights :devillook
It really really feels like the flywheel just opened up the M5 though, I love it! Just make sure you break it in properly.

Yea its like a 13.5 lb difference :D

Oh yea...I forgot the UUC kit is the larger 850csi style clutch pack. I just have a UUC clutch in my car (not any larger) and I'd like to get a LTW flywheel (I don't believe UUC sells them individually though for the standard size clutch)...JB Racing puts out a 13lb flywheel though. Obviously a significant increase over stock.

DO IT! Lightweight flywheels are FTW!

aesthetics11186 11-07-2006, 11:36 PM Damn. those E39 M5's are so nice! 400hp out of a cool, sleek, sexy 4door. Can't beat that. By far my favorite sedan
