Since you all have been so helpful with my alledged "6 speed" 525i question, I thought I'd give you a few more. I bought my "mint" (not) 1995 E34 off of Ebay and discovered a few problems.

1. The electric mirrors do not work. When I move the switch I can not hear anything. I used electronic cleaner to clean the contacts, to no avail. I bought a switch that hasnt come in yet. ... is this the likely problem?

2. The lighting from the information center on the center dash is very dim. Is this something wrong with the information center itself or is there an easy fix?

3. My washer fluid does not work. I read the threads about this. There is not any clicking noise when i activate the washer fluid. .... is this likely the pump?

I also have a problem with the electric head rest, but I think I can fix that.

Thanks for helping a new BMW chick out.... If you haven't read my other post, I'm the handy one. Hubby knows nothing about cars. :)

#1 is kind've hard to diagnose, assuming you already checked the fuse, you can use a voltmeter to see if the switch is getting power.
For #2, see:

1. Since you've bought a new switch, then, yes, it's the switch (we hope).

2. There is a little rheostat wheel right next to the headlight switch that controls brightness for the instrument panel, if this is what you're referring to concerning brightness.

3. Take the pump off the washer fluid reservoir and see if it works (makes a noise). If not, then you'd better get another.

Just as an aside, fuses are hardly ever the problem with electrical components unless someone has been messing around with the wiring. But, it's still an easy check.

I had a 95 530 that had a non functioning mirror on the passenger side. I ended up having to replace the motor. The drivers side on the same vehicle was acting strangely and I determined it had been apart and was rewired
incorrectly. The vehicle had been involved in a prior accident and whomever reassembled it did not get the wires back into the correct pin locations. When operating one mirror in certain positions the other mirror would make a clicking noise like it was trying to move at the same time. If the switch is getting current and is operating properly you may have a bad motor. Check the leads at the mirror and make sure you are getting voltage and
ground out to the motor. If I remember well I think the ground was in the wrong location so only one adjustment worked. I think the bentley manual shows wire pinouts. Unfortuanately I don't have my E34 manual any more I let it go to a good friend when he bought my 95 540 6 speed. I wish I had never sold it, it got totaled. Good luck Karl
