Hi, I am new to my BMW and i have some question. Lets say i want to drive with the electronic manual mode instead of automatic, is there anything that i should know? When i shift, am i suppose to shift according to the rpm or at free will? If i do not shift properly will it hurt my car even though it is electronic manual?

edit: sorry i forgot to mention that i have a 525i 2003

I'm guessing that you are talking about manually shifting a Steptronic transmission. You won't hurt the transmission by manually shifting it and by "lift shifting" you might reduce the wear on the clutches a bit. When to shift (rpmwise) is more a matter of how you are driving the car. For maximal accelleration you'll want to upshift near the redline, but for ordinary driving lower rpm shift points are more appropriate.

ditto post above...BUT...we are referring to models with STEPTRONIC transmission. The regular A M tranny's M mode (manual mode) wasn't created to be shifted like a manual transmission.

You didn't specify which model or year you are referring to...but the STEPTRONIC tranny wasn't available in the 7 series until the 1999 model year. Also, there are instructions in the owners manual on how to use it. If you have or you're soon to purchase one and it DOES NOT have a manual...go to www.e38.org and you'll find downloadable ones at the bottom of the left column
