We put Blizaks on both our 540 and M3 and run them through the winter. I have never had an issue with handling, but the thing we have to watch is once you get 5 or 6 inches of snow (which happens quite often up here) the M3 starts acting like a plow. Call Tire Rack and see what they suggest for your car and weather conditions.

Scott- Can you compare the 540 to the M3 under 5-6 inches? How much better is the E39?
i just remember in my e30 vert every time i started from a dead stop i would be sideways for the first 30 feet or so. also i learned not to park on snow that would require me to reverse up hill. you are stuck if you do! other then that, come on, it doesnt snow THAT Much

When I had my Z3, snow tires were a must in the winter. I had separate set of BMW wheels with Blizzaks LMs. They were excellent in the snow.
I just picked up an M Roadster and the 16 wheels don't fit. I'm looking to sell the wheels with the Blizzaks. They have a lot of thread left. I'll take some pics if you're interested.

On ice the 540 is much better due to its weight. In smaller accumulations of snow there is not much difference. Bev has moved from a very heavy AWD Subaru SVX to an Audi A4 Quattro to the M3 with snows, and she has not complained once, although there is certainly more traction with the AWDs.

The tires are in great condition with no plugs or repairs. I got the wheels from a member here and one of the wheels was not in great shape. The tire shop had a hard time balancing one of them because of the wheel. I used it for a couple of winters...no problems.
