If that range starts down low and dies out up high, replace your catalytic convertor. It that range starts up high and doesn't last long enough, get a chip, intake, and exhaust mods.

The chip will be the best place to start. I dunno about the chip-ability of an 85 535 though.

theres nothin wrong with it, i just heard that all e28s have a short range of power, and i want it broad, i was looking at a turner chip, but im not sure how to install one, and dont have the bucks to buy labor, it is a tough job?

If I can do it, anyone can do it. I'm not sure the process for E28's but if you order a chip, it should come with instructions. Chips are generally the best bang for your buck and one of the only options we have before FI. Do it!

this is gonna make me sound dumb and naive, but dont you gotta put it on a dyno and tune it after its installed on a car that old? i know its differant for newer cars. and my car already has a chip for the brake boosters i have, would i need to take that out?

Dude, the 535i responds very well to a chip. I recommend Mark D'Sylva's chips (google E.A.T.), though the Conforti (TMS) chip is very good as well.

The ECU is mounted at the top of the glove box. Unbolt it, unplug it, take it inside the house. Wear an anti-static wristband if you're the careful type (recommended). Pry up tabs, open ECU, fold open carefully, remove chip, replace with after market, close up. That's the basics. Bavarian Autosport's website has nice detailed instructions with pictures. Easy job, no tuning needed but a switch to premium gas is good when chipped. Make sure the car is in basically good tune first - plugs, clean AFM, no vacuum leaks, non-leaky injectors, etc.

The best upgrades for a 535i are the chip and a shorter diff gear ... 3.64 or 3.73 are the best for manual trans cars. Good luck.

You can also go with a new intake and exhaust to help it breathe easier. Just my .02c :)

to do a chip i think you need an 86-88. if im right your car has this crazy old device called a carbuerator. which means no chip.

Turner Motorsports has a chip for $250 for 85-88 535i's. +25HP, +29lb/ft. Thats on 91 Octane so if you have 93 you can probably get a teensy bit more.

Those cars had fuel injection. My 84 318 had fuel injection :)

Nah dude, he's smokin' some good stuff.

The E28 is a real Bimmer. I'd take it over an E36. Plus the E28 won't drive you broke like the E28 will.

^ *E36 :)

Keep the E28. It's way more original, and if you add a few mods while making sure the car is maintained properly, it can be faster and handle better than a E36 328i.

I would take a nice e28 over any (non-M) e36 any day. I loved my e28. They aren't the fastest straight line cars around, but with some suspension mods they are very fun to drive. I'd go with a chip, exhaust and springs/shocks if I were you. I think you'll start to appreciate your car a lot more

You are about as right as a pink and yellow Buick Roadmaster.

yes original, i love this car, but im not sure about throwing money into a car with so many miles(180), and since i posted this i just grinded down what i thought was a little bit of rust, turned out to be rusted through, so i cant afford any mods for a long long time
