I was following my friend in his 330 the other night and when we came to a light that was clear we decided to run. I got a decent launch and almost immediately pulled about a fender's length on him and it stayed that way up to 60 until we cut it off. I was VERY surprised. I do consider myself a pretty good driver and the 330 was an auto, and I dont think he got a very good launch off. Anyways, my first street race and my first kill.

nice kill...if the speeds would have still been goin he would have caught you, I test drive an e46 330ix auto the other day and i was a bit disappointed w the throttle respone wasn't as quick as my e30 and the auto even in manual mode upshifts if you are pussy footin around and not floorin it to the ground... btw love silver e30s, I don't see many e30s in that color its haawt!!

there is no doubt in my mind that he would have passed me very quickly if we had kept going.

ive had it for a little over 2 years. 130 on the speedo with rpms to go in 5th - cannot overcome the drag. might have been a little faster, i dont remember.

the e46 330 auto does 0-62 in 7.0s and the e30 325i does 0-62 in 8.3s ( stock factory numbers ) ..
so unless your car is modded it cant hang with the 330 to 60 ..your friend wasnt trying or doesnt know how to drive ! in my stock 328i auto ( with lsd ) i beat two e30 325i manuals about 1 car length to 60mph .. 325i doesnt stand a chance against the 330 ..
by the way i had 2 e30 325i ( 86 coupe and 87 cabrio ) really fun cars ..

if an e30/m20 is modded right it can surprise MANY and i mean MANY bimmer owners on how it can hang with or surpass some of the newer model 3series. Leaving out the M-cars and taking in consideration that e30/m20's are out of its league when you speaking of 330's and 335's, but any of the others like: E36 318/325/323/328 or E46 323/325/328 i've ran them all at one point or another and only had my ass handed to me by a E46 330 and E90 330. My car is modded up and I cant do past 140 for nothing, so once I get there im done. :checkered

Give the guy a break....
The guy in the 330 was probably not the best driver, so this is def. possible.....i've had my fare share of embarassing races, when i failed to get off the line efficiently, had wheelspin, and or mishifted.......My friend in his bone stock 2002 Passat (V-6)(190 hp and runs 17's in the quarter) beat me to 60 when i had poor reaction time/wheel spin......
A worse story is when i lose in my turbo to a bone stock E46 330ci -----he was reving, i was reving, and i stalled :shifty, that was very emabrassing

I took my 1990 325i 130 once...things were going slowly indeed. I still think it could've made it to 140...maybe 145, i was only at 51xxrpms. Who knows.

330 huh? A 330 and a 328is aren't all that far apart at all. An E90 330 yeah but an E46 330 ain't all that.

A e30 325i goes faster to 60 then 8.3 seconds.

when i had an m20 in my car still i hung with my friends 330 up until 120 then he slowly pulls away from me. This is a run from 70mph to whatever. I had a chip, headers, no cat, free flow muffler, and CAI

this is similar to what went on in my run. it was like 6am on a sunday morning and me and this guy ran each other for like 20 miles off and on as open stretches came about. btw i got the same mods with a 4.10lsd along with a 278cam and s50 injectors on my car and my 4th gear punch would squirt on him at the lower mph when going from 60-100. He would catch up to me surprised and several times gave me a  but when we got up to like 125-135mph range that e46 330 would start to slowly creep away. i have no idea if he was stock but will say them 330's are definitely strong up top. my run against a e90 330 was EMBARRASSING. :( dude had temp tags on it, so I dont think he had any mods, and from the way he pulled on me, that car doesnt need anything imo.

All you guys saying "he must be a bad driver"....how can someone be a bad driver with an auto..please. Light goes green...mash pedal, there is no "skill" to it.

BTW, this kill is completely possible. 325is does a better 0-60 than 8.3sec. I was getting 0-60 in my old stock 325e of around 8.7sec with nothing but a chip. e30 325is is a light car with LSD, and is very easy to launch. Up top sure the 330 would take it. But off the line, I don't doubt it for a second that the e30 took it.

on a side note 330ix auto's are just a joke...they are rediculously slow. I could hang with it for a split second off the line in the old 325e, and absolutly murdered it in the e34 535i, and in the 327i. So I imagine the 330i auto wouldn't be much faster.

That's why he must be a horrible driver to have lost.

I had a lil highway run against a buddy in a e46 325i i think it was a loaner car from the dealership, but from bout 60-100mph...he couldn't catch me I put about 1.5 car lengths and stayed there pretty much til i shut it down...if we would have continued he may of caught up to me but i doubt it...he would of hit the 128 mph limiter while i would of hit bout 140mph rev limited in my e30

there r a lotta 0-60 sources out there .. i rely only on the manufacturers numbers .. bmw said that the e30 325i does 0-100km in 8.3 ( thats 0-62 not 0-60 and yes its different ) whereas the 330auto does 7 flat to 62 mph so u need a really moddifed 325 to chop 1.3s to 60mph .. i know that sometime numbers on paper dont mean nuthin and on the road its different but thats cus u dont know if the car u r racing is modded and there r a lotta other factors like driving skills fair launches the age and situation of the car etc that can change a race.. bottom line a stock 330ia kills a stock 325i e30 everytime in a fair race .. the power difference more than compensate for the hefty 330 : 231hp/220lb ft ( in america 225hp/214lb i think ) ..the 325i had 171hp/164lb ft ( european ) . i loved my 325i's but its hard for those babies to hang with the new sofisticated engines of today ..

nobody is doubting that a 3L e46 isn't faster than a n e30 325i/is its just in this particualr race the e30 325is competed against the auto 330i.The race was only to 60 and was from a light so there is very little margin for error and the winner isn't always the faster car. IN a rolling run i am sure the outcome would have been different

edit: C&D tested the e30 325is at 0-60 7.4 in 1987 so the story is believable
