View Full Version : Playing tag with a Porsche 928

On my way home from work late tonight heading up 83N from Baltimore. Cruising along and saw a black 86 or older Porsche 928 darting in and out of traffic with, of all things, a Ford Escape glued to his ass. My buddy said hey, don't you wanna play tag too? but I declined due to traffic. After about 10 minutes, I realize that the Porsche/Ford are just one car in front of me again, and then one slow person in front of them are all that seperates us from gloriously open highway.

The rolling roadblocks get out of the way and they take off. I decide to play too, so I hit S mode on the tranny and get on the gas. Within a couple seconds the 7 is blowing by them both, me and my buddy chuckling. Apparently the Porsche driver, seeing a more capable opponent passing him, then gets more serious. I had put about 1500 feet or so between me and them, then I notice the Porsche headlights closing fast. I wait till he gets within a few carlengths then I stomp it. He blows by me while the big 7 decides to launch. The luxobarge isn't exactly a rocket, but it took off pretty good. I start closing the gap, he's a few cars ahead. I'm reeling him in, then all of the sudden bam, I am losing power. Look down and yup, needle is on 130 and hitting the governor. The 928 kept pulling though, and since my exit was FAST approaching I blinked my headlights to let him know I'm shutting down and say congrats on the kill. Not that he probably realized that's what I meant, but ah well.

I was impressed, I thought the old Porsches like that weren't fast, but he was hauling ass quite well.

Cliff notes: Played tag with Porsche, then screwed by the governor.

Yeah it's always fun when somebody with a decent car decides to play around. Far too many pussies own powerful cars these days. I'd love to have a chance to drive next to, let alone race a 928. My 525 wouldn't have a chance, but it'd be fun.

Congrats on your rolling freeway kill of a much lighter car with more horsepower and better aerodynamics.

He said it was an early 928, the original had only 219 hp.

I believe 282 is larger than 219.

If it was a 928S then it was rated at 238.

I believe 282 is also larger than 238.

The coefficient of drag of both 928 models is 0.34.

A 1997 BMW 740iL has a Cd of 0.31. I believe 0.34 is larger than 0.31.

Remember, the aligator eats the LARGER number.

If you don't already know the numbers, it's called google.

Hehe.. the Escape became a memory rather fast once me and the Porsche started to really take off heh. Oh yea, forgot to mention that right before we shut down and I was bouncing off the governor, a 318ti blew the doors off both of us :lol3

He said it was an 86 or older.

Therefore, by the numbers, has upward of 288hp with the number rising by the year.

It weighed around 3,600lbs, (which is less than 4,100lbs) which rose and fell based on year.

It had slightly worse drag but a far smaller frontal area than a 740.

Do yourself a favor and don't humiliate yourself again trying to tell me I'm wrong.

If he beat the car, he beat the car. Good stuff. So what? You don't own either of them, and neither do I.

I had a black/black 95 928GTS..one of the best cars I ever owned. I miss it and it was very fast once you got going. I had a few mods and it was a highway monster. I never liked the reverse gears on it but other than that what a great car. A real GT.

928s are great cars, my dad has an 1984 automatic 928, and it sucks from the line. Porsches designed the automatic not to redline first gear, so it shifts slowly at 4500 rpms instead of its 6000, which is the reason for its 7 second 0-60 time, on the highway however it should have been a good run.
